But finding good "usable" tones out of distortion or fuzz...is gonna take some time.

Try less gain than you think you should. Initial instinct is often to crank the dist level but I find better tones with less on the pedal or rolling back your guitar volume a little (esp. with Fuzz).

Nothing for me lately. I have a pile of stuff I need to throw on Reverb and get some cash in the slush fund.

Random observation:

Been gigging in full bands since '87 (and still doing it... gigged last nite in a 6 piece band).

Recently, however, I have also gigged in a 3 piece with BACKING TRACKS. No bassist, drummer, or keyboardist... just a female vocalist, male vocalist on acoustic guitar, and myself on electric guitar.

WAY MORE FUN than I expected!

The mains (minus my guitar of course) are pumped into my monitor... I still play thru my amps (Mes Boogie Mark IV and Marshall Silver Jub) but at a much lower volume (knocked down with a Hot Plate attenuator).

Awesome experience... and the drummer and bassist play perfectly in time lol.

That looks like a LOT of fun.
As a guitar player, I have to cover ALOT of ground: clean country, slide, hair metal, pop, 80 's synth, hard rock, classic rock... somewhat challenging.

I'll have a Tele and SG into a small pedalboard (wah, chorus, phaser, flanger, de!ay, compressor, tuner) into a Mesa Boogie Mark IV.

Should be a packed room tonight... will report back my f-ups tomorrow lol.

-nobody(other than other guitar nerds) will notice and f-ups...they just wanna rock.
Its funny: the guitar players are EASY to pick out.

Whenever I play something challenging (My Sharona, 25 or 6 to 4, Freebird, Hotel California, etc) the guitarists WATCH ME LIKE A HAWK... they know how difficult some of those guitar parts can be. Of course, I do the same when I'm watching bands... we just can't help ourselves lol.

Ripped thru My Sharona at a gig recently... and as the solo was ending, some guy walked right to the stage and gave me a "Thumbs Up" right in my face. He knew...

100%. Nothing better than another guitarist / musician complimenting your playing, tone, etc.

When I looked over your set list above, I immediately thought..."yep, they have a female vocalist". lol.

If she can't make the gig...

-if im honest...thats a large part of why i avoid playing "straight" covers, "nailing" someone else's part is difficult and stress inducing.
That's the tricky part: knowing when to take "artistic liberty"... or play "note for note".

The song usually "tells" me what to do... and it is time consuming to play some stuff note for note (Hotel Cali took FOREVER because of all the harmony lines during the verses).

Lmao, yes we all do it. I make sure to make it extra obvious to the bass player that Im doing it. Hey...we like to know someone in the audience actually gives a rip about us

Stage lighting got me last nite- playing on my newly built Tele with abalone fret markers... and could NOT SEE THEM under those lights. Blew chunks on several songs before I gave up and switched to my LP.

Gonna have to buy some small black round stickers from Amazon lol

I use whiteout on the sideneck on my fretless basses. Easily removable, and you still get the effect of being able to "effortlessly see" the notes to the audience without them seeing fretlines or dots.

So I have been playing this thing for a couple of weeks now and I have to say I love it. If you have ever considered purchasing one I don't think you would regret your decision. I really didn't think it would have much of a sound but plugged in it sounds like a full guitar and having smaller hands it is a dream to play. I have let 2 other people try it out and now both of them are going to buy one. My next purchase may be the Taylor 224 CE DLX in Koa top.

I finally bit the bullet and bought the Taylor GS Mini Koa from Sweetwater. They have been on backorder but just came back in. The link below is the one I purchased.

-so i bought a pedal a few months back from myguitarsupply.com and apparently was automatically entered into a gear giveaway. Won 2 pair of ehx "cans" headphones...nothing major, but cool nonetheless. Patronize these folks...out of Augusta Ga.

-thoughts on offset guitars? Im enamored with "small maker" USA made stuff...while cool not sure of resale. Should i just try to find a ln American made fender jazzmaster on the cheap?

Depends on the maker, but there is some fantastic stuff out there. Most of it will have decent resale if you buy it used and they have a good reputation. Have you checked out the Novo offerings?

The American Fender stuff is great too and will hold its value for sure. If you want to dip your toe in the water the Squier Classic Vibe series is great for the money - or the J Masics. Either way I would do the bridge upgrade to Mastery.

-any experience with fano(American made)?

The original Fanos (built by Dennis Fano) are fantastic. Some of the best ever but don't come up for sale very often.. He went into partnership to expand production but decided to leave in 2014 or so. They are still nice guitars but different from the original.

Dennis left and started Novo. They are made in Nashville and pre-covid you could tour the factory.

I've played a few LSL strats and they are great guitars too.

There are two different eras of Reverends as well. The original ones were built in the USA. The tops and backs were made of phenolic plastic with a center core of wood and hollow chambers. They were distinctive and unique and you don't see them for sale much.

About 10 years ago or so they switched to mostly solid wood models made in Korea. The still have a different spin on classic designs and since they are imported are a good value.

I've played several from both eras and generally like them all. They are solid guitars.

Gig review: played a political fundraiser on the westside of Cincy last night. Not a bad payday... $175 per person for 3 hours (this is my 3 piece band that uses backing tracks for EVERYTHING except guitars and vocals... think "glorified karaoke" lol).

Standard setlist of danceable pop/rock/country stuff... but played "Don't Bring Me Down" by ELO... and the crowd danced to it and loved it!

Never to old to learn something new I guess...
