We also want to keep our football scheduling fresh. We are presently working with other regional opponents who help us match those goals more than a decade into the future. One day, we will revisit football competition with Jackson State. In the meantime, we currently have our schedule complete, except for an annual FCS opponent, through the 2016 season and will be announcing those games shortly.

and after having read his letter, I think Greg did what he thought was best for MSU. I do believe that it is becoming increasingly difficult to schedule OOC opponents. Although I still hold my reservations due to the recruiting angle, I think this may have been a good choice given the options Greg had to choose from.

Hopefully, we'll field a good team in those years and maybe we will have expanded the stadium by then.

I didn't want to do it. They made me do it. I hate yellow and black. I was attacked by bumble bees when I was 6. Even now, when I close my eyes at night, I sometimes still see yellow and black. I tried to tell Dr. Keenum about this, but he wouldn't listen. My wife has now left me. My father won't take my calls. I knew you didn't want me to do this, but I had no choice. Forgive me, please.

c'mon xeno. What did you want him to say?

...folks sure are lining up behind the political tampering with our football schedule theory.

But I guess that's more palatable than considering that perhaps our superhuman AD had a senior moment.

/but I digress
//that'll be my last post on the subject

beat the eagles. yay.

We will sell more tickets and make more money. I have no problem with it and if Mullen is as good as I think he will be, we will kick their butts both years. The fact it is an opening game is better because we will be up for them and not have them sandwiched between SEC teams.

I think this move helps recruiting in Mississippi and South Mississippi in the following ways:

1. Come to MSU and you will get to play against your boys at BOTH of the other schools in Mississippi.
2. I know you really want to go to LSU, but if you come to MSU, not only can you rep your home state, but you can also play a couple of games in Hattiesburg where all your family/boys in South Mississippi can come see you easily.
3. Ole Miss is "too good/scared" to play Southern. Come to MSU instead, where we aren't scared to play anyone.
4. MSU is Mississippi's team. Come here and prove it by beating Ole Miss and USM and then winning the SEC.

Strike one? Strike One against you for being a p*ssy.

Yes, Greg Byrne, you have failed us for scheduling one football game against a CUSA team. That makes sense.

Edited to add: Don't mean for this to be a personal attack against just you. Allow this to serve as my response to all the idiots on this board who have said something along the lines of "Strike One for the Ninja." I expect that the Ninja has cried a solemn tear upon his realization that his constituency is a bunch of temperamental children who would rather NOT play Southern than have a competent AD.

Using your analogy, two more similar mistakes should lead to his firing. This hardly rises to that level.

This is more like stubbing your toe on the way to the batter's box.

After reading the letter, it is clear to me that Byrne (a) thinks he got a good deal (b) completed our schedule for non-conf through 2015 and (c) thinks it is best for MSU. I can't ask for more. No strike in my book. I think it was best to play them first game or after a 1AA warm-up. Looks like LT wasn't the only one concerned with keeping us in the black.

I'm quite certain he was given strike one for the wall-thing in center field and strike two for the "Mississppi State" incident by various internet badasses.

Fire Byrne!

The "it will hurt recruiting" ******** is the dumbest of all the arguments in this debate. Sure, we might be giving them a Super Bowl, and they may stand to benefit more financially from this than us, but I just can't see it being the end of the world with a recruit.

MSU coach: Hi there. You're quite the talented player. We'd love to have you come to Starkville and play for us.

Recruit: What do you have to offer me?

MSU coach: Well, for starters, we run a spread offense. It's perfect for someone as talented as you are.

Recruit: But I'm thinking about going to USM. I saw where they beat you last year.

MSU coach: Yes, they did. The atmosphere was electric and everybody was fired up. But that was the biggest game of the year for them. At State, every game is the biggest game of the year. We play on TV every single week. You want to make it to the pros? Your chances will increase with that kind of exposure. If we win our conference, we get a chance to play for a national championship. At USM, you get to play in the Liberty Bowl. Have a look around our campus. Isn't it beautiful? See that stadium over there? It holds 55,000 people. Your face might be on one of those banners one day. At USM, their stadium holds 30,000 people and looks like a Jim Walter manufactured home. They don't play on TV very much, and when they do, it's usually on Thursday night or something goofy. Everybody is watching The Office on Thursdays. See that pretty girl over there? There's more of those here than in Hattiesburg. Come check out our facilities - locker room, weight room, IPF - were you more impressed with ours or USM's during your visit there? Be honest. Coach Mullen would really love to have a player like you wearing maroon. We think you're the type of player that will turn our program around. Here's an offer letter. What do you think?

Recruit: I'm going to sign with Southern Miss.

MSU coach: Why? What about all that stuff I just said?

Recruit: Well, they beat you last year. Plus my auntie lives in Wiggins.

His first strike came back in December when people didn't like the shade of silver on the helmet M-State logo.
