The Simple Fix For All NCAA Problems

The easiest thing in the world to fix every NCAA problem under the sun. Allow players to independently market their own name and likeness. This allows the stars to get paid what they’re worth. This allows the scrubs to continue to get a free education. This moves advertising money away from the schools, the coaches, and the conferences and puts it in the pockets of the players and leads to equitable distribution of the billions of $’s that are flying around every year. The reason it will never happen is the last reason listed why it makes so much sense. Because this organization, it’s schools, and it’s coaches are enriching themselves on the backs of the unpaid labor and they will never give their money away to make the situation fair. As long as the situation is inequitable to a large portion of the people involved you better believe there will continue to be a black market. The people in charge need to quit acting like Puritans while they keep stuffing the money in their pocket. The real reason they uphold their Puritan ideals is to keep from sharing the $’s.

I’ve always believed players should be allowed to have an agent or sign with one while they are in college. The true days of Amateur athletics went out the window when the Olympics began allowing professionals to compete. Why is their such a push for players to maintain some sort of “amateur status” what’s the point? Allow the players to market themselves as long as they don’t use the schools likeness and those obligations do not interfere with their basketball schedules.

I hate defending Ohio State, but when Pryor (I think?...right?) got them on probation and ultimately Tressel fired for selling his game merchandise....I mean really....who gives a crap. It's his stuff. If a fan wants to buy it then so freaking what. It's like prohibition where people want to act like no one is drinking, or marijuana laws today for that matter. It's happening. Put it above board where it can be regulated. These dudes are selling their likeness on the side regardless....quit acting like it isn't happening.

Most of all fat cat AD’s wouldn’t make near as much for being a glorified fundraiser as more of those funds would go to the players. We also would stop seeing colleges building $100’s of millions of facilities to entertain players. The players could rent a nice pad and entertain themselves. This would allow universities to refocus on their mission of educating the entire student body instead of constantly upgrading athletic facilities.

As an example of how well this model works look to the Olympics. They quit monitoring amateurism 30 years ago. They still don’t pay athletes to compete, but the athletes are free to market their name and use their likeness to market products and apparel. The big stars like Michael Phelps and Lindsey Vonn make a lot of money off of this ability even though they do not get paid to compete and the lesser known folks still get their trip paid for and still get a chance to knock off the big star in the pool or on the slope and make a name for them self (that they can profit off of). This didn’t ruin the Olympics and it won’t ruin college sports. Heck it could enhance college sports. If someone like Kevin Knox could make $100,000 slinging some products around Lexington he may be more likely to stick around another year and develop his game here. I know playing for UK is a heck of a lot more exciting than the freaking D-League.

IMO the NCAA has far outlived it's usefulness - when a program is permitted to play kids for decades who lack even basic academic skills
needed to graduate from high school, it's time to blow it all up!

NBA needs to get rid of age rule, start investing and expanding their minor league, and start taking high school juniors and seniors. This will take care of all the agents and shoe companies who chase the elite talent.

NCAA needs to increase player "stipends/cost of living expenses" and budget more money for family travel. This will appease the families of athletes who do end up in college.

Also, there needs to be a better vetting process for players coming into college. I mean there are only a few sports that make money and only a small percentage of athletes within those sports who are talented enough to attract agents and other hustler types. The NCAA and the individual institution need to have a better look into kids who are coming in with some hype and "pro potential"

I'm not saying these are the only two solutions, but it's a start.

I may not like it but I know a fantasy when I see it. No way does a greedy president suddenly get generous with the billions he's making off athletics. The only reason the FBI discovered this scandal first is because it's in the best interest of the UNCAA to keep the status quo. Only the feds would break up this party but advertisers are surely lobbying for the current model until it becomes apparent a new model is in play. So I agree with the OP. Quasi-amateur student-athletes are here a while longer based on greed.

Letting programs pay players doesn’t fix anything. It keeps the NCAA in the police role because they will set up the rules of what can and cannot be paid. It doesn’t matter if teams are allowed to pay players more the top stars will always be paid too little unless there is no limit to what they can make. Let every player sign an agent and let them negotiate whatever they can on the side. They can make whatever they make. The teams don’t pay anyone anything except tuition and room and board. Remove the NCAA rules from the euqation. This means pros can play college basketball, they just have to be a student and they can only play for 4 years. In fact someone that never went to college but flames out in the NBA would still have 4 years. You’re basically removing the amateur requirement and maintaining the student requirement. Setting some minimum pay that we can allow the schools to give the players is just more of the same garbage that is already going on. It’s just more red tape. What I am proposing is removing all the red tape except for the requirement to go to school.
