Thoughts on Lebby’s progression

Yep, my pessimism on Jeff Lebby can be summed up in two words, Coleman Hutzler. He took bad talent last year and seemingly coached them down. Hutzler had no real credentials to warrant an SEC DC job and his recruiting has not been up to par. You would think with all of the defensive playing time we can offer with decent NIL we could get some real difference makers to come but apparently not. And now our defensive HS recruiting has gone in the toilet. I really can't think of any good reason why he was retained. Lebby keeping him could very well be his downfall.
The only thing that makes me feel better about the Hutzler hire is that we didn’t overpay****

You guys have lost your minds. Lebby is not getting fired period. He will get 3 years regardless. Probly 4. I'm sure this team will be improved this season altho I doubt it will show in the win loss column. 3 is the floor with a ceiling of 6. 6 being a 17n miracle. Just not many teams on this schedule we are gonna beat. Arizona State supposedly is very good. Beating them would be impressive. Who from the SEC ? Arkansas ? Gotta contain Taylen Green. Missouri ? Might beat them. That's about it. I'm eager for thos season to get started. Hopefully I'm still excited 3 games in. But I think Lebby has a long leash

Gotta wonder if that’s truly patience or the fact that schools simply can’t be paying 7 figure buyouts with $21M in revenue sharing on the way
That’s definitely part it. Part of it is just random coincidence though. No SEC coach got fired last year for the first time in forever. Close to half may be fired this year though.

Each game we play this year we'll know more. However, I did see improvement from game 1 to game 12 last year to think we well be vastly improved. Not sure about our record though, if they can steal a game or 3 he'll be ok.

2-10 and he’s gone. More than that with competitive play he will get another year.

This is year 1 for Lebby whether some people like it or not. We can talk about all this after the season coming up because it's pointless right now.
Unless our top donors and Selmon himself have come to some sort of gentlemen's agreement that last year should be stricken from the record, this simply isn't true no matter how many times posters keep saying it. Was he dealt a tough first hand? Sure, but he was paid $4.5M last year to do a job, and it was a miserable performance.

Then, even if we were to agree that this should be considered year 1 from W/L standpoint, it's not as if winning football games is his only responsibility. He is in charge of an SEC football team which means from day 1, he should be promoting the program, he should be recruiting SEC caliber players, and he should be surrounding himself with a A-grade staff. He has all the resources for every one of those areas, yet last year was a complete $hitshow across the board.

I tend to agree with others that anything better than 2-10 probably gets him another year, but there is a 0% chance that Selmon and our top football donors haven't already been having conversations about next steps if 2-10 does happen.

I'm still trying to cope with the realization that one of the cream puffs on our schedule this year beat Notre Dame last year. That is definitely next level Mississippi State. We've made an art form out of impossible scheduling.

Its no wonder State is a perennial cellar dweller
It spans many athletic directors so maybe there is more to it than what message board geniuses believe. Many on here act like $ grows on sweet gum trees in Ms. Firing a coach cost $ and a hit on a schools reputation. He'll get fired if once it's obvious he needs to be fired. We (State) ain't and he ain't at that point.

Its a no win situation for coaches here. Leach goes 9 and 4 and fans crying about running the ball more then he does and we scrap the entire air raid system so we can " run da bawl more" which naturally is a disaster. Every fan is b*tching so that guy gets canned mid-season and now here we are wanting to fire another coach in his second season. I know Dan spoiled us (I guess) to 7/8 win seasons but it's totally ignorant to change coaches your underwear. Lebby certainly wasnt my first choice but even Jesus couldn't satisfy you 17ers. At least Lebby is consistent and intentional when he is in that building. Whatever that means.

If that's the case we absolutely shouldn't fire Lebby. Just keep the current staff and fire Hutzler while promoting within. That way if we move on the next year, no huge buy out.

Glad I’m not emotional invested in this crap anymore.
I have become more of a generalized college football fan, still a better game than the nfl. I have a few teams I would like to see do well but no real emotional rooting interest. I liked seeing Cigaretti win at Indiana, generally root for underdogs, innovators.

I don’t know why they keep saying it. I mean even Arkansas canned a guy for back to back 2-10. Unless they are dumb enough think Leach really did wreck the program, and honestly…..I don’t put it past them to truly think that way. So who knows.

Just another example of why our football culture is the worst in the P4.

very true. The group of boosters who Leach denied access to, blew it up, fired everybody, installed the 1940s offense, then go back in to the shadows and try to blame the guy who passed away. That 2023 team Leach left behind returned like 17 starters off a 9-4 team and had the most seniors in the sec. what Kind of moron would screw that up ?

there is a four page thread up on sec rant I read today chronicling the disaster and fans around the sec basically say everything I just stated and ask why did miss state ever do that ?

has to be one of the stupidest things in major conference history
