We discussed many rules (including the clock running out in the first half of the Arkansas game a few years ago) and then made it to the cowbell question. Given the recent history of the issue, I was surprised by the answer. The SEC officials can not enforce a penalty that is not in the NCAA rule book. To make a long story short, there is no longer an artificial noisemaker rule in the NCAA rule book. He said that the SEC may have other actions that they could take against us, but that it could not be in the form of an in-game penalty. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes">

I would rather have a 10 yard penatly than:

"Dear MSU, Since most of our other member institutions already begrudge the $10 million extra you will be getting starting next year from the conference, we are taking this opportunity to issue a $5 million penalty, per year, in perpetuity for your failure to abide by the conference's noisemaker rule. Should you have any questions, or wish to protest this decision, we remind you about the $5 million per year that is not part of this penalty. Yet."

Nah, they wouldn't do that. Would they?

the local officials at the gate told a fan behind me that he could not bring in his two cowbells and that it was a rule. I immediately spoke up and said it was an SEC game rule but not non conference. He looked back and told me that all he was doing was enforcing what was told to him

Mr. work the gate and keep the cowbells out man, there are large signs posted everywhere prohibiting cowbells in the stadium that don't say anything about conference or non-conference.

That guy trying to bring cowbells in deserved to be tasered, maced, and kicked.

at every entrance "This stadium prohibits: Artificial Noisemakers"

I bet the ref you spoke to this morning was right when saying they couldn't asses an on the field penalty for a conference rule. Which is what the 'Artificial Noisemaker' rule is, a conference rule.

Since our stadium is a member of the SEC they have to 'enforce' that to some degree. I would imagin if the SEC was really worried about they'll start handing down fines, and telling MSU to police it's stadium better. There was talk of that being the case after big basketball wins and students storming the court.

comes to cowbells and taking them into the stadium.
Yes, I have seen people walk right in the gate, cowbell in hand and never have one word said to them while others have had theirs confiscated.
BUT, why it is so damn hard to put just a little <17ing> effort into hiding it just a bit.
Cowbells have been "illegal" since about the mid '70's so if you walk in and its in plain sight, dont ***** about it being taken.
Never, not once in the last 20 years have I seen someone have their bell taken while in the stands at a home game.
basically, hide it and then when in the stadium, ring the hell out of it!

The Au-Barn game when it comes to the cowbell rule. My guess is sooner of later our officials are going to have to start enforcing the rule at the gate. I'm only worried because this is an SEC game. I can never remember them being this dick hard about it on the first non SEC home game. Makes me wonder how they will act for a conference game.

Just have to work harder at hiding them. They WILL NEVER EVER take my cowbell (or flask) from me at a Mississippi State football game.

A friend and I walked in the game with a ticket in one hand and a cowbell in the other. No one said a word to us. Heck, 15,000+ cowbells made it in Saturday. I don't think they were to serious about keeping them out. Cowbells are any worse than those silly looking thunder stick things.

if that happened to me i would have took my ticket stub and just acted like i didn't hear him and just said something that didn't make any sense like 'me too'. those old guys aren't going to leave the gate unattended especially with the long lines and good luck finding me amidst the 100s of fans in that area. whenever i go i hide it if i remember. i have never been told that i couldn't bring the thing in.

At the student gate Saturday, they were actually patting people down finding cowbells and making them either go take them back somewhere or leave them on a table outside the stadium and just walk in without them.. finally, the guy who was over the security people told them that as long as the cowbells were hidden they didnt have to worry about taking them away.. so everyone from then on was able to get them in and all the cowbells on that table were gone in 30 seconds.. I figure from now on as long as they are hidden it wont be a big deal.. thats how it was last year

cowbells. However, I have not taken one to a game in 7 or 8 years. I just don't like the big signs saying I shouldn't take them in and my son watching me sneak around a rule.

But, I am not defending the rule. Only the one guy's knowlege of the rule. The rule is a stadium-wide ban. Enforcement is, uh, a little less strict. And I have noticed that there are more cowbells at non-conference games. That means that there are either more confused gate keepers like the one at your gate, or more fans think the rule is still strictly just an SEC ban, or both.

One of my friends tried to bring his cowbell in, but I assumed that he would sneak it in like most people and they told him not to bring it in. I told the police officer "This is a non-conference game". And she said that she was doing what they told her to do and I told her that was BS.

The funny part was my friend didn't know what to do, and first he sat it down on the ground. He then confessed that he didn't know how to sneak a cowbell in. I was appaled because I thought that was something that all of us were taught as children. So, I taught him how to sneak one in and we went to a different gate and got in fine.

I thought the whole thing was funny, but I was still pissed that they wouldn't let him bring his cowbell in.
