It's like the Corsi ratings in the NHL, the evaluations are based on things that MIGHT affect the game. But, certainly teams can be successful without a high Corsi; same goes for QBR, the measured stats may not even be important for the coach, let alone the game.

Interestingly that game no longer shows on the "best games" list on ESPN.

LOL. Good read and truly skewers ESPN and their proprietary analysis. As for Lavino he doesn't turn it over much which is critical but he throws a lot of short passes which don't move the chains, a point brought out in the article. Pigheaded Flood should have put in Rettig if nothing more than to mix it up and perhaps given the team a spark.

Very good point that whatever high ranking that has been repeatedly posted about Lavino- it means nothing. Results are what counts.

You're right. This board should be restricted to "We Win" posts after a victory and "We Lose" posts after we don't. Nothing else counts.

He doesn't? He has 11 INTs on 253 attempts, or 1 for every 23 attempts. As a comparison, Nova was 1 of every 27 attempts as a senior, 1 in 22 as a junior, 1 in 24 as a sophomore, and 1 in 25 as a freshman. He throws just as many picks as Nova did on average... if not slightly more.

I remember a story from Lou Hotlz when he first took over job at ND. His QB told the press that he was pretty sure he would throw less than 12 interceptions in the upcoming current year (he had a high amount of ints in previous year). Lou Holtz told the qb "I can guarantee you will throw less than 12 ints this year because you won't be playing after you throw 10".

It would even be nice to be able to see "we scored 3-4 touchdowns but still lost" posts, as opposed to "we were able to score 1 or no touchdowns and got blown out".

Okay- stand corrected as I never did analysis and more based on my perception. Nova consistently turned ball over many times and often in critical situations that killed us and he did lead the nation at one point for interceptions- regardless those are high numbers and does explain why we are so bad. Turnovers kill you.

Just to be clear, I am not a Lavino supporter, and would like to have seen Rettig given a chance but can cut Lavino some slack being inexperienced. My point was more that making small yardage completions may look good on paper or ranking but doesn't put points on the board. It is Flood who I fault for not making changes with Nova and now Lavino and it is he who has utterly failed this program.
