The Randleman ranking was and is still mind boggling to me. Were state champions in 1981 and 1982 suffering a loss to cross county 3A rival Eastern Randolph first game of each season. ER went 6-4 and 5-5. In 1983 ER won the state 3A title but the two teams did not play with Randleman only playing nine regular season games. First week of the season Randleman beat Asheboro by a TD the following week ER beat the Comets 27-0.
All three seasons (81-83) Randleman had several very tight games including at least one each playoff that was settled by a missed PAT or a few points. In the 1983 season they won four games by less than a TD and all of those except Asheboro were against 2A conference members or in the playoffs.
Different times and different game. Randleman was a fine football team but I am not sure if they were a top ten team in NC.

Treat all 3A Titles fairly and accurately.
Knowing the NCHSAA today, they will say , "fine, they are all regional".

That 1982 Jax team was just plain nasty. IMO one of the top 5 Defenses in NC 4A history. The only team in 7 conference games to score a point on them was Hoggard, but Jax still rolled them 52-6. There was a big brawl at and of game. I was 11 years old sitting 2 or 3 rows back from field and somebody heaved a loose helmet that almost hit me in the head.

The most simple solution for 3A is to call one the 13 county (state) champion and one the 93 county (state) champion.
You can put the caveat that some of the 13 counties had both NCHSAA and WNCHSAA teams.
Alexander (1 school in the county), Cabarrus (2 of 5 schools in the county), Caldwell (all 3), Cleveland (all 4), Davidson (3 of 8), Davie (1), Gaston (5 of 7), Iredell (all 5), Randolph (2 of 5), Rowan (all 5), Rutherford (all 3), Stanly (2 of 4), Watauga (1), and Wilkes (1 of 4).

My thing is this 72 and this is what irks me....i can see if u came on our 4a board with some legit banter about 4a teams or say this 4a team 2 look out for or this 4a seems a little down but no instead there's criticism and reference or some shade rhrown of how great Shelby is even tho they plays NOBODY of relevence .Cool I can understand u love ur school and even tho they are jus 2a they are a good 2a team with good history. The year ur team FINALLY play someone relevent....goose egg, boat raced, took behind the woodshed. But instead of taking the loss n being humble u go the "We played great for playing a big school". How ur articles on our 4a boards still will refer 2 some way back 2 Shelby gets old man. Truth is Shelby would lose 2 any of the teams left if they lined up n played..lets b real. Hokie had a mental breakdown after the Shelby loss to RH SOUTHPOINTE. He couldnt comprehend how the greatest dynasty in the history of NC football could lose to lowly SC football team. I think it was the zero points that put him over the top.

Funny how we are the only two here that actually played on State Champion teams that need to be recognized as such.
Mule is so consumed with Shelby hate, he does not realize that, followed to his logical conclusion, none of Reidsville's State Championships from 1930 to 1970 would count in a summary where rival associations prohibit a fully qualified State Champion. He does not realize we are fighting for him, too.
And this cause goes way beyond just Shelby and Reidsville programs.
And as for btango, what is your deal man? You have also shown a disdain for us personally and some how appoint yourself as THE authority on NC high school football history. You have always failed to identify on WHAT authority you speak nor share your resume. What are you hiding?
Your data is presented to purposefully cloud and confuse the discussion, all the while knowing what we are trying to accomplish with this mission.
The last WNCHSAA year had 38 teams, and the NCHSAA 3A had about 90, you say? Yet the NCHSAA 3A title contested was only missing 10% of the state's 3A schools, you say?
Try 30%, or A THIRD OF THE STATE'S 3A SCHOOLS. You know btango, the good ones in the MIDDLE of the state. See what we mean?

Still don't have a clue as to how this topic pertains to the 4a message board but I will play anyway. I give sovereignty to the NCHSAA as the surviving governing body that emerged from several different associations. Kind of like how the big four in professional sports survived various upstart leagues. The NBA survived and merged with ABA, much like the WNCHSAA and NCHSAA merger. The NBA has never recognized the 9 years of ABA Championship teams. And why should they, they were not members of the their association. Does not tarnish in anyway the Championships won by say Julius Erving with the Nets, or George McInnis title with the Pacers it just means they were ABA titles not NBA. The Cleveland Browns have World Championships but not Super Bowls. I know that nothing I or any one else says is going to change your mind and that is your prerogative, I respect and applaud your tenacity and passion for your team. But you have not garnered one single sympathetic comment from any 4a poster in fact just the opposite so why would you want to keep this going? Because you said in hopes of some of the board members may read preps, well if i were you i wouldn't want them reading the 4a board because it does not champion your cause. You want to keep bashing your head against that brick wall called the NCHSAA be my guest.
He just wants history changed so he can claim that Shelby has won more "State Championships" that any other team in North Carolina history.
Its really that simple.
It's funny too because there was nothing "state" about the WNCHSAA championships. It really was more of a Western Piedmont championship than anything else. A few of the foothill teams and possibly Watauga were in the WNCHSAA at the end. Totally agree with you Mule.
