Per Wardlaw, he is hearing that Zach Smith may be done with football due to all the concussions he's had. He is supposedly taking time away to think it over

I didn't know he was continually concussing himself. I'm dreading seeing how bad his back-up will be considering that Toast was the best option we had.

From a personal standpoint I feel bad for Zach having to give up football. From a team standpoint, it can't make our secondary any worse. Maybe he would not have had so many concussions if he would have knocked the ball away more rather than letting them catch it and then hitting them.

I know him and he's a good kid. He doesn't have the physical abilities to play that position in the SEC, but he does give it all he has. Go back and watch the play before the Johnson pick against Bama and you'll see Zack make a play at the line with his head. I believe it was the 3rd down play. He was a true freshman then.
It was a dive play, I believe, and Zack through his body in there to stop the runner. I'm as frustrated with his play this season, as anyone, but he's probably the best we have right now. Come on Mathew Wells!!!

I was pretty sure Brandon Lafell knocked him retarded.

I sort of give Zach a pass for that play.

I wasn't aware that he'd had his bell rung very badly.

Something tells me this guy has performed so badly this year and the pass defense has sucked bad enough that he's just quitting. I'm filing this one in the Wesley Carroll category. Didn't perform great, didn't live up to his potential, mostly a victim of poor coaching and/or a poor scheme.

Screw you Brandon LaFell. You hit him so damned hard, he is now (was) the worst defensive back in the history of NCAA football.

rushing the QB against Vandy and LSU. He was a lot better playing closer to the line- fast enough to rush effectivly and physical enough to hold his own. He just didn't seem comfortable playing away from the line.

Has anyone else thought that the timing of this might have something to do with the #1 passing offense in the NCAA coming to town on Saturday?

he's the one that sold Zach Smith on being the next John Lynch and then hyped as the steal of the class.

Zach was a really good HS QB that probably could have had a fine career somewhere. If he's quitting because he's truly having medical issues or because he's not sure he belongs, either way it's on Croom. If he came into my house when I was 17 and told me I was a NFL FS, I probably would've believed it too. I would have looked at my offers and gone with the SEC school, just like Smith did.

This is why.

This kid gives his all on the field and is still exposed play after play. Then, he has people who don't have half the athletic ability that he has constantly criticizing him during the game and afterwards on message boards.

It must be a tough place to be in. To give your all. And still can't get the job done. Even worse, your failures are on display which allows dimwits to bash you repeatedly.

That must be a miserable place. I don't blame him if he removes himself from that situation.

he's out there busting his hump doing the best he can. I am as frustrated watching our secondary this year as anyone but nobody forced MSU coaches to sign the guy up and then make him a starting safety in the SEC (no easy job). I think he's been piled on pretty hard this year by everyone and he's certainly not the only DB we've got that's not making plays. Certainly sorry to hear he's having this kind of health concern with concussions.

Smith had looked pretty good at safetey. One of the things he was good at was timing his hits on receivers down the field. This year, he's been trying to make a play on the ball and failing miserably at it.

I honestly don't see how this is on Croom in any way. It's his fault that Smith has had concussion problems? And how is it his fault that he's been burned so bad all year? FYI, Croom isn't coaching here anymore. Seriously, a lot of these posts/threads are getting ridiculous. It hijacks threads and makes them about the past and not about the issue at hand.

And what's wrong with taking the SEC offer? It's not like at QB he would have had a long term career, and even if he's done he'll stay on scholly.

So up until today, before we found out about his health problems, you would have admired him for quitting the team b/c people bash on him on message boards and during the game? You're pathetic. If you can't stand to be in the spotlight and get criticized, don't play. You think Mullen and staff complimented his play last week? Hell no. I admire him for giving it his all, but he wasn't good. If this is true about all the concussions, that sucks he had to end his career like this. He had a lotta heart, but very little ability. He just wasn't an SEC player. Like I've said before, he should have been at Delta State or North Alabama and could have been a stud there.

He participated in the little run of big hits we had during the 07egg bowl. Fitzhugh first down, Smith second down, Chaney third down.

Because Croom was an incompetent %!@#$$! buffoon that had absolutely no idea how to judge SEC talent. Exhibit A is Mike Henig. Dude got crushed by people 4x his size repeatedly, now his collarbone is a mangled mess full of metal, and he has nothing to show for it. Was it Croom's fault that Henig had fragile bones? No, but Croom should have known better to put someone his size behind an offensive line that couldn't block against defensive linemen whose sole purpose was to crush you. Croom set Henig up for failure. Same thing with Smith. Dude got his **** rocked repeatedly last year and most everyone knows that once you have a concussion, you are more susceptible to concussions from then on.

One thing I don't ever want people to start doing is feeling sorry for Croom. Just because he isn't here anymore doesn't relieve him from criticism. @##% that son of a *****.

evaluated Smith's as D1 when there was NO F'N REASON for any competent D1 coach to think he could play at this level. He mislead him. Stupid, lazy, incompetent jackass.

When was he getting constantly blasted last year? Other than the LaFell hit, I don't know of other times he got rocked. Give me specifics. Don't give me a generality.

Who said I felt sorry for Croom? I just don't think it's relevant.

Edited to move one comment to different reply. Got two thoughts going on at once.

Again, Smith has looked pretty good up until this year. He more than held his own as a backup his first two years. So to say he's not D1 talent is ridiculous. He just hasn't turned out as good as we thought. People are making it sound like he has no talent whatsoever.

Smith did the best he could. I hope he doesn't end up with premature dementia. Crxxms put his *** in this position. Three years ago a competent D1 coach takes one look at Smith's 6'0", buck 80, 4.8, white *** and shows him a map to Samford.

That was actually in the post that I orginally made.

But since, you brought it up, Smith ran a 4.5 coming out of high school. Timed at 4.52 at the Tuscaloosa combine by Scout.

Those were far from big hits though, except for Chaney's lick. He made some tackles, but this AROB guy is acting like he's the modern day Ronnie Lott just out there brutalizing people.

Seriously. Criticize him all you want for coverage woes, but he hits a ton. I don't know how you miss that.
