In no particular order:

- March down field LSU 2009, followed by goal line stuff;
- Prentis return Tennessee 1998, followed by Peerless Price;
- Don't Stop Believing Alabama 2017, followed by choke;
- TD Alabama 2014, followed by Blake Sims converting multiple 3rd and longs to put game out of reach;
- Auburn 2011 goal line stuff.

I didn't list the Banks INT because we never really expected to win that game.

The game when Amari Cooper ran out of bounds, then back in and caught the winning TD without a penalty being called. Was that 2014?

I don't know what year it was, but it wasn't 2014. If I recall correctly, that was a home game. We played at Bama in 2014.

2001 byu and 2003 (or 04? Whenever it was at home) Oregon both hurt really bad because we were horrible and in both games we went down big only to fight all the way back and couldn’t get it done in the end.

My Top 5, again following the rule that I had to see it in person:

1999 Bama - I was a kid and this was my first season being a State fan, so I had literally never seen us lose before (don’t worry I’ve seen plenty since). We went to the game and it was close most of the way and there was the infamous phantom holding call on Pig Prather’s long punt return. I was very much in the kid phase where I cried when we lost so that was the start of that. Didn’t take long for me to grow numb to it lol.

2009 LSU - man that one hurt. After they had completely destroyed us for a decade, we finally had our golden opportunity. And then Chad Jones happened. And then Tyson Lee didn’t make the pitch on 4th down. That was very difficult to stomach.

2010 Arkansas - I still view this as the best game I’ve ever witnessed at DWS. Awesome back and forth game where we lost in double OT. The Ballard fumble through the end zone on what was a great effort play stung bad.

2015 LSU - I felt really good about our chances going in and they dominated us for the first 3 quarters. Got down 21-6 and it seemed like they went into a soft zone coverage late and we took advantage. Got within 2 and had a misfire between Dak and Shumphert on the 2 point try that we didn’t convert. Got the ball back, drove down on the edge of field goal range, then had a really bad delay of game penalty on us and missed a fairly long field goal at the buzzer. Then if I recall, we played an FCS team the next week and they made a longer kick than the one we missed against LSU. SMH.

2017 Bama - it was right there for the taking. We played a great first three quarters. And then we tightened up majorly in the 4th and lost it. A lot of questionable coaching moves in that 4th quarter, by both Mullen and Grantham.

I hate to even mention this one, but September 20, 2001 - the 'Go to Hell Bin Laden" game. First game back for the country to start healing, we did everything right in the opening ceremony and then marched right down the field with ease early. We looked to be in control and should have beaten the Cocks in that game. Then we lose 16-14. That was heartbreakingly deflating, and it was the first step in the slow death walk of the next 3 years.

More specifically, I thought the season turned on one play. I remember my buddy and I looking at each other and saying "this ain't good" when Dicenzo limped off the field in the first quarter. He had just carved up the SoCar defense on that drive and was poised to have a big year. Then the dreaded "high ankle sprain" that all of a sudden put the offense on Dontae Walker, turning the tide of the season.

1. 1998 SECCG
2. 1997 Egg Bowl
3. 2000 South Carolina
4. 2000 Arkansas (OT)
5. 2000 LSU (OT)

That 2000 team was 3 heartbreak losses (2 in OT) from a 10-1 regular season.
I had forgotten about 2000 South Carolina. I wanted to bring 2000 in in some way, but couldn't come up with that one 'moment', but SC is it. That whole season just sucked for as good of a team as we were. Had the awesome 2 week period with Florida and Auburn, but should have been so much more.

Even the Egg Bowl is a game we had won, though the score doesn't indicate it.

Honorable mention for 2000 South Carolina. Their starting QB gets dinged up. Their back up comes in for one play and throws a back breaking TD pass.

Man....you can torture yourself if you want to, but that season was headed downhill as soon as we Heavy Lebbied the DL......except back in them days it was from JUCO, rather than other D1 programs.

3rd stringer actually.

I had a class with Kendall Roberson and he damn near cried talking about it the next Monday.

Big picture I would agree with that... but I didn't know how bad Snyder, Oyewankenobi and Co. were going to be at the time. 'Zo's injury was the first thing I remember making that all around shittty season go south (9/11 notwithstanding)

Most have been mentioned, but I will add a few:

1994 Bama - we were up 10 points with about 8 minutes to go (in 1994 that was almost insurmountable with those offenses) and Freddie Kitchens led the comeback to beat us in Starkville.

1999 Bama - a bullsh*t penalty on a punt return for a TD (I think) cost us the game and the SEC West title. We lost to Arkansas the next week because we were so hung over from this loss

This game was the end of Mississippi State football for almost a decade. The next 8 years MSU football was like the children of Israel wandering around the desert.

My No. 1 is the 1997 Egg Bowl

I know the 98 SECCG should be at the top due to significance, but it didn't break my heart the way so many other losses did. That Tuberville Egg Bowl 2 pt con loss though ...

The 97 Egg Bowl sucked the sweat from a dead man's balls.

(1) 1998 SEC Championship game. Not sure that qualifies as heart break, but it's the most we've had on the line.
(2) 2014 Egg Bowl. Looks like the committee probably would have screwed us in the end regardless, but if our starting Free Safety can keep his crazy at bay for a couple more weeks or Market doesn't tear his ACL the first or second series, or we can get Josh Robinson to just run straight ahead, we leave that game expecting to go to the playoffs.
(3) 2014 Orange Bowl. Dan's arrogance cost us in a big game. Being completely unprepared to cover the option after extra time to prepare in bowl practices is incredibly frustrating.
(4) 2007 LSU - Wasn't hugely significant in the end, but the fan base was dying for a big win at that point and leaving with a moral victory was pretty disheartening when all we had to do was pitch the ball to boobie or put a little air under the ball.

All the years run together but if I remember correctly, that Arkansas game was played in the sleet and we missed a short FG or extra point to win it. And I think we would've clinched the west with a win.

The LSU game in 2000 in BR I remember vividly. I was there. We had a 2 TD lead in the second half and they came back to tie right at the end of the game. When they scored the tying TD, the volume of noise in that place was absolutely unbelievable. And then of course they won in OT. Madkin special.

That 2000 Arkansas game was the day the wheels came off and we went soft. Perhaps the most miserable I've ever been at a football game. It was cold and sleeting most of the game. Then Arkansas showed up and physically whipped us. We got several injuries, but the big one was Pig Prather tearing his ACL. We never recovered from that game until Mullen.

All four of our losses were in games we had at least a 9 point lead in the second quarter of later. That team had the ability to be in the Sugar Bowl if they could close games out. Instead of NOLA we got Shreveport.

That 2000 LSU game had the game tieing TD for LSU where the RB fumbled around the 5 yard line and chased the ball only for Eugene Clinton to catch it and kneel in the endzone.

Never knew that could cause a TD for the other team but it did in Baton Rouge. Anytime they want to mention Rod Gibson didn't get in, which was close but we also scored on one of the plays before that they ruled down, LSU RB wasn't even close in 2000.

I remember USCe running like 7 straight QB Draws for the winning TD. That was the end of Joe Lee Dunn.
