Stolen from T&L... but they discussed something on the show today that I though was fun. What are the top5 moments in MSU football history? Not games, but moments.

Neither Brian nor Robbie mentioned two or three things that I thought were some of the funnest moments we had over the last 15 years. I get the Bama fumble recovery. I get the 98 OM pick and kick.

But these 3 three things were pretty incredible to me;
1) Banks pick 6 against Florida (loudest I ever heard DWS - but this one ranks a little lower cause we lost)
2) Blocked FG at Arkansas to win the wild shootout in the freezing cold over there (couldn't sleep after this one)
3) Piss and the Miss against OM in 2019 (couldn't sleep after this one either)

What say ye?

None of yours would be on my list. We're talking top five all time?

Bama fumble recovery 1980
Madkin to Sirmones Egg Bowl 1999
Victory over Auburn in 2014
Pegues punt return vs Ole Miss
Kevin Prentiss punt return vs Tennessee (we didn't win the game but in that moment we felt like we had a shot to beat them and win the SEC)

This won't make any other lists, I know, but I distinctly remember one single moment when I realized things were about to be different. The one moment when I thought, "holy crap, we might actually be good" and "dang, we could actually put up a fight here" when I didn't think it was possible.

2014, Baton Rouge, first quarter. We are driving and I've been drinking, so it's fun, but I know as always it will end up in a punt or maybe at best a field goal. They always stop us eventually. We just can't beat these guys. They're in our heads. Been in our heads since the 80's. Something always happens. But hey, glad we're driving, at least we are showing we will be competitive this year for a change. That's nice. Oh look at that, Dak is throwing it to the left side to somebody on an out route - nice idea, but I'm sure it will sail out of the endzone so we'll kick the FG. Take the points, that's fine... HOLY SHITTTTTTTTTTTTT DID HE CATCH THAT ONE HANDED???

Dak to Bear. I'll always remember that moment, the rest of that game, and the wild ride the next few weeks. Good damn times.

Some of my personal honorable mentions:

Wyatt TD pass at Auburn to complete the comeback victory in 1999
Dicenzo Miller running wild on Florida in 2000 (3rd and 57 and it was LOUD in DWS)
Jon Banks intercepts Tebow
Josh Morgan absolutely destroys Clemson receiver at Peach Bowl
Beating Arky to win the west
55-20 over Ole Miss in their crib - Nicky Fitz running wild
Swinging from the goalposts in 96 after we beat Bama for the first time in 16 years
Dak TD run vs LSU
Artie Cosby long FG to beat Memphis State
Beating UT and Peyton
Hearing during Egg Bowl 2008 that Croom was out after the game.

I'm sure if I thought about it long enough, I'd have more. I know I'm forgetting some big moments

Taite's fake to Davis to hit 300lb Kendall Watkins on 4th and goal.....comes to mind. The stadium wasn't anything like it is today...but it got loud on that play!
Mould's amazing catch just prior, set it up.

It was also Peyton's first TD pass after Helton got hurt.

Kevin Prentiss punt return in the SECCG. Obviously it didn't cause a win, but at that moment, in that stadium.....we were closer to the promised land than we've ever been.

I loved Keith Jackson's comments about it in Sports Illustrated. (I think this was his last game, other than maybe some random west coast games in later years)

That’s a good list along with your top ones. Maybe I missed it but Anthony Johnson’s pick six against Alabama.

I can only in good conscience include moments I witnessed in person for my Top 5.

2014 LSU - my favorite game I’ve ever been to. I believed we could win going in, I did. But I did not know we would be up by multiple touchdowns for most of the game. The feeling of being in an empty Tiger Stadium with a full MSU section, I’ll never forget.

2013 Egg Bowl - if you look at this game in totality, it was a pretty terrible football game until Dak entered in the 4th quarter. But the ending was iconic and the legend was truly born on that night. This guy lost his mom to cancer and suffered what was thought to be a season ending injury in the same week about a month before the Egg Bowl. And then he comes back to lead us to a win over OM and keep the bowl streak going in a year where things in-state were trending heavily toward OM and we needed that win in the worst way.

2021 Auburn - when I tell you I was 30 seconds away from leaving, I am not lying. We were googling lunch restaurants mid second quarter. We had a 4th and medium down 28-3 that if we hadn’t converted, I was bailing. We converted and scored right before half, and so we decided we might as well wait a little while longer. What followed was the Will Rogers magnum opus. He played the game of his life and we went on a 40-0 run like it was nothing. The second half of that game was wild to witness, especially being around a number of Auburn fans where we were sitting.

2009 Egg Bowl - I cannot express enough how good this felt as the last game of the 2000’s which was terrible decade for us. Kicking their teeth in and then Dan getting on the mic after and talking more trash. It was spectacular. And set the stage for what was to come the next few years.

2017 Alabama - we lost this game in really painful fashion so I hesitate to mention it. That 4th quarter still hurts and has been a source of “what if” for 8 years now. But yall, the feeling of having Saban on the ropes and seeing all the Bama fans in DWS squirm was incredible in the moment. This is BY FAR the best Don’t Stop Believing that ever happened at DWS. It still sucks real bad that we couldn’t finish the job. But the feeling of hope against them when we’d had none for a decade…. I remember that game more vividly than any other game we’ve played in the last decade.

ETA: I was at Auburn 2014 but I have a weird relationship with that game. Was working in the press box and it was a VERY stressful day up there so I don’t think I really appreciated what happened until I laid down in bed later that night.

All of these mentioned are great, but I will add another one to the list. Being in the stadium with my dad as a 13 year old kid in 1997 at Bryant Denny and just seeing how happy he was to watch JJ Johnson annihilate Alabama in Tuscaloosa. We sat on the 50 yard line and the stadium was damn near empty at the end of the game and I did not really understand why he was so happy because I didn’t understand how good Alabama had been his entire life.

2013 Egg Bowl. The lead up to the week had rumors on if Russell or Dak would be available. We had already seen the glimpse of Dak and knew he might be special. When he started warming up on the sideline and than entered the game, I already knew we were going to win

On the ride back home, I realized how good the next year team could be.

1. Beating Bama in 96
We had been so close so many times. They had the ball and were approaching midfield, needing only a field goal to win. Everyone assumed that's what they'd do, because that was who they were. They had to try to convert a 4th down. They threw it to a receiver in the left flats and they dropped it as our guy knocked it away. Just the overall feeling that we had done it - the amazing realization it was true, it was real that we had beaten them.

2. Beating Auburn to become No. 1 - specifically the fumble recovery early in the game - it dawned on me at that moment there may be new and different days possible for State fans.

3. Beating Florida on the Thursday night game in the early 90s - Steve Superior, Shane Matthews - back when a national audience and a Thursday night game was a big deal - almost like a mini-Game Day. We lost Sleepy for good that night but didn't know until later.

4. Beating Arkansas in 98 to clinch the trip to Atlanta. The Egg Bowl win ensured a non-tie for the SEC West, but the Arkansas game clinched Atlanta. I worked for the media then and was standing under the right upright when the kick went through. It wasn't as close to missing as it looked, but it made my heart skip a beat nonetheless.

5. The Tennessee game with the TE Watkins TD catch set up by the Moulds 4th down conversion.

I'm glad to know this, because every single time I've seen it in the last 27 years, I'm afraid he missed it... I thought he may have when I watched it live, but I was too busy celebrating to worry about it then.

It looks a lot worse on TV than it looked in person. The spot for the kick was as close as an extra point, so the ball is through the upright just a quarter-second or so after it's kicked. By the time it's spinning and cutting away, it's long since gone through.

Tyson Lee’s TD jump pass to beat LSU in Mullen’s first year.

Oh, wait…if only Lee had been 4” taller….
