This mess would have been avoided if Rutgers employed a competent athletic director who fired the failing gymnastics coach for terrible performance.
The opposite happened. Hobbs and Umme traded sex for contracts.
I read the complaint. Key points:
• The complaint cites Umme's "stellar performance" and "numerous record-breaking seasons." The document did not state Umme ran the lowest performing team in the conference. Typical lawyering here. Let's see how Rutgers and the judge respond to this.
• Hobbs said that during his tenure as Athletic Director, “claims of abuse were levied against almost every head coach of a women’s program.” Hobbs added not a single complaint “was made against a coach in a men’s program” during his tenure.
• The complaint blames a bunch of whiny, complaining gymnasts -- including gymnasts stealing teammates' boyfriends -- for the allegations against Umme, all of which investigations concluded were unsubstantiated.
The Hobbs and Umme scandal will end up costing Rutgers millions. Maybe Hobbs is preparing similar legal action to bring money out of Rutgers to Hobbs.
