Mr. Hines! Question? Myers Park is 3rd in their conference. If they lose to Olympic this Friday would they still be in?

Seeding

  • Conference champions will be seeded before any other qualifying teams by RPI rating
  • All other teams will be seeded after the conference champions by RPI rating of the school, regardless of conference finish
  • Each region (East/West) will be seeded independently of one another, utilizing the RPI rating of the school
  • The highest finishing team from a given classification in a split conference will automatically qualify, regardless of overall conference finish (minimum of 2 schools per classification)

Interesting that Cox Mill is showing to play Grimsley. I believe they have only 1 win in conference. As of now Hickory Ridge. Lake Norman, Mooresville are top 3. I think West Cabarrus is 2-3 in conference.

yep. Cox Mill's RPI is better than West Cabarrus... and that's what matters this year for the most part.

How is MP 3rd in conference, but seeded above/with many 2nd place finishers? Or after 1s is it straight RPI ranking?
The way i read it is, after all 1st. place conference winners are seeded say 1-10, then it gets tricky, only the 2nd place finishers are guaranteed a spot in the bracket, but all 2nd, 3rd, 4th place teams are then lumped together in a group and seeded by there RPI rank until the bracket is full, so in theory a 2nd place team could be seeded anywhere from 11th seed down to last given there rank

someone please correct me if i’m mistaken, but i can’t see where strength of schedule is factored in the RPI rating. i see opponent winning percentage and opponents opponents winning percentage. but to me that isn’t the same thing as SOS.

Not sure if this is the answer?

NCHSAA Playoff Ranking Formula

An RPI (Ratings Percentage Index) formula will be used for all team bracketed playoffs. The formula will be as follows for all sports:

RPI = (0.3 x WP) + (0.4 x OWP) + (0.3 x OOWP)

  • Winning Percentage (WP):
Divide the number of wins by the number of total games played. A tie is worth half a win. If a win in an individual contest gives that contest a winning percentage of 1.00, a tie will give that individual contest a winning percentage of .500 for both teams.
  • Opponents’ Winning Percentage (OWP):
Average the winning percentages of a team’s opponents. (Note: This is not calculated via the opponents' combined record, instead of by averaging each winning percentage of the opponents.) All games involving the team whose RPI is being calculated are ignored in this process.
  • Opponents’ Opponents Winning Percentage (OOWP):
The same process as described above, except calculated for the opponents of a team’s opponents. (Note: There is an exception for out-of-state teams, which is addressed below.)

so a win vs a decent 1A team is valued the same as a win vs a decent 4A team?

Page and SE Guilford are a couple of dangerous low seeds. Also, that potential Northern Guilford/Davie matchup has fireworks written all over it.

Looks like it. Encourages scheduling cupcakes so that your winning percentage is higher.

No reward for playing a tough schedule.
That seems to be the case. Not ideal.
Question. If Olympic beats MP could Olympic still miss the playoffs? Or is this a win and get in game for them?

at first glance i was on board with the RPI thing. but that is exactly what i saw when i read the paragraph long explanation for each of the seeding qualifications, with no mention of strength of schedule anywhere. we can do better than this.

Wow really? So Butler would’ve been better off scheduling Berry, West Meck and Sun Valley instead of OCA, Richmond and St. John?

Opponents winning percentage is also included in the formula. So, yes the easy W would help in the winning % but the losing records for those teams would drag the RPI down. The more a team wins and the more the team you play wins = higher RPI.

a 4A team that plays down 2 and even 3 classifications in non conference play has a huge advantage over a 4A team(s) that schedules tough opponents in their own classification under these guidelines. regardless of the op and oop numbers.
