I think the answer to the question you asked regarding qb reads is telling. The fact he spun it so far away from the actual question tells you that there is no autonomy.
Not just this year. What i’ve been saying all year. It’s hurting our offense.

What i’ve been saying all year. It’s hurting our offense.
He kept it. But it he didn’t read it. It was pre determined. He kept it vs Ohio State and Indiana, which makes me wonder whether he was banged up during the OSU game, and that is why he didn’t run vs Iowa.
My take is part this and that they know Iowa hits hard and are trying to save him for the next 2 games. Especially if they knew Monangai was dinged. He kept it vs Ohio State and Indiana, which makes me wonder whether he was banged up during the OSU game, and that is why he didn’t run vs Iowa.
And perhaps that is appropriate or not, based on Greg and Kirk's judgment on whether GW is ready to make those decisions on the fly in game action. Don't think that there are many coaches who would directly answer that question, perhaps unless it was a clear yes for someone like Penix Jr. QBs, like anyone else develop at different rates and have different learning curves. Depending on their natural ability, high school coaching and level of high school play, as well as the offensive acumen and philosophy of the coaching staff, some younger players may get turned loose earlier. We all know the ball is the program around here, and that will seem to always be an overriding factor why the QB may have to wear 3 belts and 4 pairs of suspenders out there. He kept it. But it he didn’t read it. It was pre determined.

Agreed he shouldn’t answer the question but the read to keep or give is not that difficult. I am not advocating to make GW a run first or second QB. But if we are going to go through the drama and theatrics of running a slower developing mesh/read exchange make the call (upstairs) to “read” and run GW more often to keep the d honest and make GW’s feet something they need to worry about. Otherwise just go with a more traditional and quicker hand off to make it easier on the OL and RB.And perhaps that is appropriate or not, based on Greg and Kirk's judgment on whether GW is ready to make those decisions on the fly in game action. Sounds good. But how many did he read? That was and has been the discussionHe only had 3 rushes vs Iowa but had
13 vs OSU.
How does Iowa hit harder, than OS or PS?My take is part this and that they know Iowa hits hard and are trying to save him for the next 2 games. Especially if they knew Monangai was dinged.
Love the “Honey Mooners” reference. Here's the transcript (with my annotations/takes in ALLCAPS):
Q. It seems like the team's best games this year is when Gavin was able to be effective running the ball. On Saturday, he wasn't really able to get it going, and only kept it a few times. On those inside zones, does Gavin have the autonomy to pull and run if the aggressive end is crashing, or is that decision made pre-snap?
GREG SCHIANO: It's interesting that you read that question. That was somewhere from your Football 101 or -- yeah, I am not going to get into how we read plays, Richie. I'll never do that. That would be foolish on my part.[I'M NOT GONNA ANSWER THE QUESTION, BUT HERE'S MY ANSWER]
You're right, Gavin didn't carry it as much as he has, and in retrospect, maybe we should have, right. There's a lot of [HOMINA, HOMINA, HOMINA]-- the tough thing where we are right now is you know, if all of us were together on July 31, and we were hanging out talking and somebody said, okay, you're going to the fourth quarter at Kinnick Stadium and it's 6-0 Iowa, and by the way, you're 6-3, would you take it, would you take it? Would you have taken it in July?[GREG IS THINKING, WHY IS RICHIE LOOKING AT ME LIKE ARE YOU GOING TO ANSWER THE QUESTION OR WHAT?]
I would have taken it in July. We are a developmental program. We are developing, for sure. [THERE'S YOUR HINT, RICHIE--NO FREAKING WAY, NOT AT THIS POINT!!!!] We are going like this (indicating upward trajectory).
But let's realize who we are. That's one of the biggest things I talk to our team about. At Rutgers, and I think that meant a lot that have been here longer than I have. So I kind of know about this place. I might not know about every place but I know about this place. [I HOPE HE FORGOT ABOUT THE ACTUAL QUESTION HE ASKED BY NOW, BOY WHY DOES HE LOOK LIKE HE IS NOT GETTING THE ANSWER?] And at this place, you've really got to stay focused on who you are.
See, the way we've played the game, has allowed us to be in every single game this year going into the fourth quarter with an opportunity to win. [THERE'S YOUR ANSWER, RICHIE!!!-NO WAY] In the past, that wasn't the case. To me, that's an incremental improvement. I know we'd all love to go from 4-8 to 12-0, but it's just not going to work that way at Rutgers. [ALL YOU MESSAGE BOARD GENIUSES, SHUT THE HELL UP! YOU WANT ASH BACK HERE, THIS IS PROGRESS!!!] Maybe somewhere else but not here. Maybe if you go into free agency -- I'm sorry, NIL, and get all these players in a swoop because you had a bankroll the size of Detroit, then maybe you would turn it (snapping fingers.) [IF I HAD MICHAEL PENIX, JR OR CAM RISING, THEN MOST DEFINITELY, YES!!!!!!]
So we know who we are. I know who we are. And the way we are playing the game right now might not necessarily be the way we play it two years from now when some of these younger players that we think are really promising now are developed, and playing at a different level, then we can play the game differently. [GOT IT? MAYBE WHEN GAVIN IS IN HIS FINAL YEAR WE LET HIM MAKE THOSE DECISIONS]
So everything we do right now, whether it's right or wrong that, can be argued, that's the beautiful thing about sports, right. That's why you guys have jobs. You write stuff. It stirs it up. People want to talk about it. That's why I have a job, because people want to come watch it.
But we really think the way we are doing [PLAYING IT SUPER CONSERVATIVE. THE BALL IS THE PROGRAM!!!!] it gives us the best chance to win. It doesn't guarantee us a win. We are not at that point. Hopefully down the road we'll be at that point. That's kind of how we do it.
With your question, it's particular how we're going to read something out. I would never get into that. [DON'T DISAGREE WITH GREG ON THIS] But I will say that I do agree with you, when he runs the ball, he's been effective. Nothing was really effective Saturday after the first quarter. First quarter, you know, we're moving the ball. We just shoot ourselves in the foot with those procedure penalties. It's not going to be quiet this weekend, right. [EXPECT THE SAME GAME PLAN]
So it was really loud at Iowa and guess what, at Beaver Stadium, it gets pretty loud. We are going to have to get over that and figure out how to operate in the noise. Poise in the noise.
Long answer. [OR NON-ANSWER]
Wait a minute, so they recognized Iowa ‘hits hard’ and decided to save him for next weeks’ opponent who beat iowa 31-0 earlier this year?My take is part this and that they know Iowa hits hard and are trying to save him for the next 2 games. Especially if they knew Monangai was dinged.
0, I thought we all agreed on that.Sounds good. But how many did he read? That was and has been the discussion
Iowa is a very physical team. Much more so than Penn St. Road game against a ranked opponent. GS doesn't have a good track record in those games anyway. I bet the team was very banged up after the OSU game and game plan was to try to stay healthy and steal one. Didn't work out and we move on. Beating PSU is always the goal but don't think we have the bodies now.Wait a minute, so they recognized Iowa ‘hits hard’ and decided to save him for next weeks’ opponent who beat iowa 31-0 earlier this year?
Cause that makes total sense![]()
We will have to agree to disagree. There’s no universe where you will convince me a team is ‘Much more physical’ than an opponent who beat them 31-0 head to head and limited them to 76 TOTAL yards.Iowa is a very physical team. I do agree that anyone who thinks we’re going into beaver stadium and beating the Nits on Saturday needs their head examined. I disagree though with your assessment that the goal of a season is whether or not we beat psu. It screams little brother
Your favorite team is going down this weekend as Rutgers has a path to success. Michigan threw 24 times and rushed 55 times. We will do similarly.
We’re not in the same stratosphere as Michigan, but we have the Big Tens leading rusher and Michigan doesn’t. They ran the ball 55 times Saturday. We can do similarly but the question is can we do so as effectively?Unfortunately Al you’re likely correct. My favorite team and Alma Mater, Rutgers, is likely going down this weekend.
You can spare me the RutgersAl nonsensical path to success if you think we’re in the same stratosphere as a program as Michigan
Our coach would be more than happy to run the ball 55 times -- but that requires that we be able to make first downs so that we can keep the ball. Against Iowa, we ran the ball 23 times and tried to pass it 18 times. (The rushes include a sack and the ball getting away on a bad snap.) We had a grand total of 7 first downs -- only 2 by rushing. We were 2-11 on third down. I'd like to think we'll do better against Penn State, but . . .We’re not in the same stratosphere as Michigan, but we have the Big Tens leading rusher and Michigan doesn’t. If we don’t generate at least 200 yards of offense, it’s going to be a long day, and an ugly, ugly loss, much worse than 4 touchdowns. We generated 300 yards of offense vs Ohio State. Need to do the same vs Penn State.Al your posts make no sense. We will be hard pressed to generate 200 yards of offense. This is the first game I won’t be betting on RU. Vegas has the Spread wrong. Penn St. will win by at least 4 TD’s on Saturday. Will never bet against us or on that pedo enabler program.
