London will receive $2.7 million as a buyout. - contract ran through 2016.

No idea of total significance of "resigns" in this case.
It does seem that in Flood's case it might make a real difference in the obligations to the staff.

Makes it sound nicer. He was fired. If he truly resigned (voluntarily) he would not get paid

Nobody just walks away from what they are owed. Yes, functionally he was fired... but the question would be - is 'resigned' simply a polite Virginia way to phrase it - or was there negotiating that went on? is it just semantics or is there significance?
In the case of Flood, - it appears that if he could be coaxed into signing a 'resignation' - it would dramatically reduce the obligation to the rest of Flood's staff.
