Our offense is definitely better than theirs. The quarterback that is playing now (the starter is out for the year) is terrible. Their defense, though, is probably top five in the country. I'm predicting a 3-0 final score when we play them. Not sure who will have the three and who will have the goose egg.

I agree. A bad Minny team has kept them at bay. But, Minnesota is having more luck with throwing the ball than running. That doesn't exactly bode well for us.

Are you watching closely? Minny's QB is a train wreck. He's 10/24 today, and makes Gavin look like a sharp shooter.
Against Michigan, he was . 5/15 1 TD/ 2 INT

Glad Iowa loses in the best way. DeJean signaled with his left hand before returning a punt for a TD - which is illegal - and the refs overturned the TD because of it, and the Iowa fans are going bonkers. Throwing trash on the field... very poor look. The rule is dumb, but it is what it is. Sucks to suck, Iowa. Hope we beat the doors off them.

That game was hard to watch. I especially detest the PJ Fleck outfit. Feel bad for the Iowa punt returner, though the rule is the rule.

That will be a very tough game on the road. You basically have 2 teams that want to play the same way. It will be very tough for RU to run the ball. If RU can make some plays in the pass game and special teams they will be right there.

Decades ago there was a UConn punt returner who was talking to the ref before the start of a game

He asked what type of hand movements would be considered a fair catch signal, and what hand movement would not, and also not penalized

And, as you might guess, during a return he made a hand motion of sorts that stopped the defense and ran for a td

More than likely the rules have been tighter since

edit:.... I believe I found it....

I remember the UConn player being interviewed afterwards and he said that the official said that wave was not considered a fair catch, thus legal.... the announcers were not aware of that during the game, and just thought the officials missed the signal

Yeah the rule is clear now. Any sort of waving motion by a punt returner counts as a signal, and therefore, the receiving team cannot advance the ball. Even if it's an "invalid" signal -- not the original fair catch wave -- that still counts if there is any sort of waving motion, and the ball cannot be advanced. (Rule is under Section 8 Fair Catch)

Give the ball to Minangai and give him some blocking.

Iowa is an inexcusably bad offensive team. They make the clown show offenses under Ash look like Air Coryell.
I saw them vs. Pedd State and I don't know if you could honestly say they had an offense.
We're gonna have to really stink to lose to those guys.

I was referring specifically to his performance late in the game. I can't remember if it was the 3rd or 4th quarter but he led a couple of good drives with his arm.

Admittedly, I was watching 2 other games, simultaneously.

Does that make us the number 4 defense in the country- our defense has a better run defense and a better pass defense. They give up a total of 1 pt less per game.
We also score more than 10 more points per game then they do and 100 more yards on offense.

Our chances of beating Iowa and /or Maryland now have improved. Makes the rest of the season more interesting. Also looking forward to not having a blowout loss to OSU.

Last year at home to Iowa, RU lost the turnover battle 0-3 - with a first-half INT and fumble - both were returned for defensive touchdowns. Iowa only scored one offensive TD. RU is improved in all facets this year. I'm not ready to predict a win, but I think RU plays a much closer game in 2023.

The game is still 3 weeks away. Using the Sagarin ratings as a guide, this game would currently be a 7.5-point favorite. ESPN gives us a one-in-three chance of winning.

We can beat Iowa. We just can't go extreme vanilla on offense and expect to come away with a win. Conservative is fine, but just running up the gut ain't gonna work. There will be no 12-15 play TD drives against Iowa.

How many deep shots against mich, Wisconsin, MSU, Indiana? Don't make a max protect with 1 guy going deep.

I think the opposite. We will go very vanilla as Iowa wins by turnovers.
They are known as a running team themselves but have been over 100 yds 4 times. Only 2 times in P5 play.
They have given up over 100 yds on the ground 6 times.
Rutgers have been over 100 6 times and given up 100 yds 5 times
We have 4 games over 250 yds on the ground and Wisc had the most against us with 213
Iowa has 1 game over 250 and that was W.Mich and PSU got 215 on them
TOP RU 32 mins and Iowa 27
Both Iowa and Rutgers have been very little penalized but Iowa opponents are the heaviest penalized. While our opponents rarely get called- we are at the bottom.

The way to win is TOP and not making mistakes against Iowa. Penalties and turnovers.
Hmmmmmmm- makes you wonder what the game plan will be.

BTW- on offense- we are a lot better on the ground then them and we are better in the air. 179- 117 on the ground and 148- 117 in the air
on Defense
RU 121-125 on the ground
RU 156-189 in the air

As long as we take care of the ball at Iowa ….we can certainly beat them.Still owe them for breaking Jamarion Grants ankle in a close 13-6 loss…. Just stupid 4 downs by us attempting to run the frosh QB for a TD.

They have a better punter than us. If we're going to run it up the gut all game, we're setting ourselves to lose a winnable game. Are we going to get so scared that we throw 15 or less passes? If our plan demands 0 turnovers, that's a bad plan. Minn won the TO battle 3-0 and escaped with a win. They didn't think Cooper D. had called a fair catch at the end.

Having GW do a few QB keepers out the backside is still conservative. More off tackle runs is still conservative. Can we try some low-risk conservative deception or misdirection?

I don't expect to see us throw in between the lbs and safeties and I'm ok with that. The deep in to Jackson against MSU was a mistake by the OC (INT on the play).

They will eat our lunch by doing more than a couple misdirections. Right now hoping to get as many healthy bodies ready for Ohio State as possible.Keep Choppin’ …

Not sure I ‘d agree … Minny was lucky … very lucky to have Cooper Dejeans TD called back on the punt.

And Minny ran the ball 45 times...Iowa threw the ball more than they did. And minny has less passing yards than we do and they have more rushing yards than Iowa does.
They also give up 60 more yards and 8 more points then we do...

Not to get ahead of the OSU game but even Iowa knows Rutgers can win this one out there. We are due against them. Always a great environment and with tradition. Good fanbase that comes with history of more wins than losses. What are our traditions other than KEEP CHOPPING and THE KNIGHT ON THE HORSE.. boardwalk… Robeson Statue when team arrives… What am I forgetting.

Iowa offense vs. Minnesota:
Opening drive: 70 yards, resulted in a FG. 64 yards passing on three completions (3-6), six yards rushing on four carries.

Iowa offense the rest of the game: 57 yards, three turnovers. QB was 7-22 for 52 more yards and a pick. He lost two fumbles, too. Non-QB rushing: 20 carries for 33 yards

Their TD drive was set up after downing a punt at the 1. Iowa forced a three and out, took over on the Minnesota 46, and drove it in for their TD. That drive was propped up by a 15 yard facemask, a pass interference to put it at the 6, an offsides to make it half the distance, an unsportsmanlike conduct on the D after Iowa was stuffed on 3rd and goal on the 1 to give Iowa another 1st down at the 1. Actual offense on the 46 yard drive: 13 yards rushing on eight attempts.

This is NOT THE GAME to be throwing the ball all over the field.

This is the game to run the ball until they prove they will stop it. And you do not want to make mistakes- no TO's, very few penalties and no ST mistakes.
Sounds to me like a 45+ running play type of game that the winning team may not even score 20

Can't resist, there's more!

Offense yards per game: 232.4. That's almost 67 yards less than 13th place Northwestern in the conference! (95 yards worse than us.)

Yards allowed per game, as yesrutgers says: 313.8 for them, 276.8 for us

Rushing yards allowed: RU 964 yards (3.6 ypc), Iowa 996 yards (3.4 ypc) Only one rushing TD allowed is very impressive, I will give them that.

Their net punting is 5.4 yards per punt better than ours.

They have allowed 17 sacks, we have allowed 7. We have 17 sacks, they have 13.

They have 8 interceptions.

They average 12 first downs PER GAME. They are 29 for 110 on 3rd down conversions, more than 7% worse than anyone else in the league. They are 2-4 on 4th down.

They have a big advantage in penalty yards per game this year (29.5 yards against, 58.6 yards by opponent).

Time of possession, they are dead last at 26:37. Not surprising since their offense cannot stay on the field.

Don't beat yourself and make them sustain drives, and get that win. I feel pretty good about our chances.

Must be strange for Iowa fans. The football team is the reverse of their basketball team.

I keep going through the B1G stats and keep asking myself if everyone just can't believe what we are doing this year and that it has to come back to reality.
The Iowa game- everything about this game, if you took the name off the headings and the jersey's- you would think we would be favored by 6, not the other way.

If our team is healthy: Powell, Bailey, etc. we win this game
Edit: with Powell out for the year Walker or Wright Collins will need to step up big time.
