we should be consistently getting around 10th-11th ranked recruiting classes

I remember both cos and Elmo as being questionable coaching hires, but the reason they were hired was for their recruiting. They were billed as top recruiters, believe it not.
Cos was hired because he worked with BC before at Wi and they were buddies not sure about elmo - I do not believe Cos was known as some great recruiter

Yes...we need to give them time, and our evaluation before signing day is too soon. However, we will have a pretty good idea how they shape up come February.

However, just like a would cut some slack to a new sales guy (shoot, if I hired someone green I would know I would need to train them), I would not give the same slack to a guy who I hired with a wealth of experience (presumably at a higher cost). We went the experience route with our coaches. Thus, the coaching blunders this past year were far more disconcerting because of their experience. If we don't get it done by February in terms of recruiting and recruit near the levels of OSU that will be disconcerting as well. What's the old saying, "A leopard doesn't change his spots..."
agree with this the concern is that we have a long way to go yet and a short time to do it in. This was the same concern with the previous staff except for them it was they did not get after it sooner with these guys we do not know yet

I don't understand how some posters expect Ne. to to be in the top 10-15 recruiting when we continue to hire coaches who can't break the top 50. Ne. is no longer relevant, nor will they be in the near future. Enjoy watching the Foster Farms Bowl in 2017.

I will take some of that
to meet expectations. We have the 11th most valuable program now and will move up once we get full revenue share.

THE correlation between the two doesn't resonate for me. I don't disagree about better recruiting classes however.

I'm just sitting back and waiting on what the back half of this class looks like. Unfortunately, my hopes aren't that high.

I wouldn't always say nice guys finish last, TO eventually dominated. But NU use to have a small army of scouts/salesman types covering the whole country. Now only coaches can contact recruits. So it helps to have a few ace recruiters. TO also inherited a top program and started with a recruiting "EDGE" .

When it came to recruiting, TO didn't take any ****. He was honest and legit but he didn't mind recruiting a little dirty (I don't mean illegal dirty, I mean he'd go down throwing punches dirty).

How many times did we hear from Bo and the current staff about "recruiting the right kind of kid". Please explain to me WTF that means. TO didn't believe in this BS. Recruit thugs. Recruit punks. Recruit bad boys and teach them how to be men. Forget all of TO's wins on the football field and titles, look how many generations of life he changed because he taught troubled punks how to be respectable men.

How many ghettos is this current staff walking in to recruit? We don't hear the Bill Busch stories of creeping up in Compton at night. The thing is, Bo's temper would never allow him to handle coaching a punk. He didn't have the patience or the mind to handle this. I am not sure Riley does either. He seems like the nice guy that would rather cut ties then deal with issues. It's just my opinion but we will never win anything great with a team full of choir boys. We need a collective mix.

I think half of the recruiting talent is eliminated early in the recruiting process due to kids being labeled "no good". I don't think a 17 year old knows what the f*** life is about yet, especially one who grew up in the ghetto without a father. People can change for the better. "recruiting only the right kids" syndrome is where the first problem with this staff starts in recruiting. TO never shied away from helping a problem child grow up to be a man. It's the old Nebraska man in him I guess. Maybe its growing up in the state and hearing history lessons about Father Flanagan & Boystown and how bad kids can still turn around and be good adults. IDK. I just see this as an issue. They cut their list down considerable by doing this and this creates more risk of not signing a good class. Oh well, that's my rant.

Agree with a lot of this... But isn't there a deadline for salesmen to show what they can do? Shouldn't Riley's deadline be Signing Day?

Your right. Hopefully we can catch a hail Mary this last month.

(except Aaron Rodgers... he sat the first three seasons because Favre was ahead of him).

Haha, I know that but it could totally be sold via my version to a recruit too. Winking

Do you have any facts to back up your claim that this staff is taking half the talent off their board because they are not choir boys? Anything more than a lack of scary stories?

It's a guesstimate and bit of an exaggeration on the #. I figured that was understood but I guess not to all. But Riley has said (just as Bo did) that they recruit a certain kind of kid, etc. Riley stated at the start of this season that they won't deal with certain kids that are trouble like they would at Oregon state. (and since I have to spell everything out to you, this was not verbatim). It's true. These guys aren't going into the hood to recruit. i just believe everyone deserves a chance ESPECIALLY unprivileged kids even if they seem worthless. Get some of those kids away from the hood and they can turn their lives around. Plus God knows we need some edge on this team.

This is where we miss a Dr Tom type of recruiter. He'd be able to sell Moms of troubled kids that he'd be able to whip them into shape and about 95% of the time, he did.

I like what you've said here. It's true... At the same time, it seems as if Riley doesn't want that headache any longer. Understandable, but hopefully it doesn't backfire. His approach seems to be to go after the same level recruits without all the baggage, but then the competition is obviously much stiffer.

I recall Bill Snyder offering a recruit with a murder/ homicide charge and felt pressure to reneg.

Riley always had some shady characters on his team at OSU. I find it hard to believe this is what he is actually doing. Frankly, it's probably a recruiting ploy to all the moms out there. Send your son to us because we only take the highest character player. And since nearly every mom thinks their child is a choir boy, she is going to like hearing that. I think this statement is actually a good thing that Riley is doing.
