Yep, and people used religion to justify Jim Crow too. Just because it's "your religion" doesn't make it somehow not bigotry.

Again, what harm would having a gay person in a troop do? There's going to be gay people out in the real world, at your jobs, and probably at your churches too. Might as well learn at any early age that they're just people too.

Just so we are clear, I have no problem with the Ghey rights or marriage. I have no problem with the homophobes. What I do have a problem with is if someone expresses in either direction and are automatically called for tar and feathering for their statements and apologies or firings demanded.

Everyone needs to get a 17ing grip and realize not everyone is going to agree with you or express their opinions the way you think they should.

Who called for a tar and feathering? All that happened in this thread is that people said he should be careful of what he says because of who he represents.

How exactly will having some gay Scouts (who already exist, obviously) somehow ruin the organization as a whole? Does he think it will all turn into a big gay orgy party? Face it -- gays aren't going to want to join the superhomophobic troops anyway, so this decision probably won't change anything. I'm not sure whether Matt's hyperbole or his outright bigotry is more unbelievable.

I don't think anyone here would be saying "oh well, that's his personal opinion" if he were saying that blacks don't deserve the chance to be Scouts.

I really feel sorry for blacks always being thrown in with gays. That just doesn`t seem fair to me.

Pretty sure he said that it is the end of the boy scouts. By interpreting it in the way you just posted, you are actually trying to make an awful opinion more politically correct.

Now you are making up ****. You can what if all day long. What if he said girls in scouts would be the end? He didn't say that.

And I still stand by the fact he can say what he believes. That doesn't mean I agree with him. That means we all have the right to say what we want to say no matter what.

You have the right to call him and ******* too. Not my call, its in the Constitution.

Or to make it MSU-related, what if Rick Ray tweeted something racist against whites? Everyone would be pissed and calling for his firing.

Do other 'sins' make you as uncomfortable as homosexuality. Should boys be excluded from being in Boy Scouts because of any other 'sins'?

And let's just toss aside the word homophobia. What we're talking about here is bigotry. If you think that your religious beliefs are justification to deny benefits that you enjoy to people who believe differently from you, that is bigotry.

Why are you pursuing this hypothetical racist remark to support your argument? Whether you like it or not he has the right to say he does not believe in Ghey lifestyle. The argument you are trying to make is about pigmentation.

And that's not only outrageously bigoted for him to say, but it's undeniably false. This will change almost nothing. If a troop is super-homophobic, gays aren't going to be trying to join. They'll just stay in the troops that already accept them.

Umm, you are really reaching dude. The bible tells us to judge with righteousness, not by appearance. Homosexuality is a sin. Being black is just skin color.

People seem to think the 1st amendment guarantees that you can say anything you want and be guaranteed not to suffer any blowback or consequences for doing so. Not sure where this idea come from.

Where is research or scientific proof that people are born gay? I've always heard this, but have yet to see scientific fact. I have seen scientific fact of people being born black.

Any time you discriminate based on the way someone was born, and that doesn't harm anyone (race, sex, religion, sexuality, favorite color, club foot, etc.) that's something that you should feel shame over, not pride.

Homosexuality as a sin is biggoted nonsense? If you don't mind me asking, what denomination do you "buy into"? You don't have to answer if you don;t want. I'm not trying to make this personal. I just want to know where same sex, sexual behavior is considered Holy.

Whether people are 100% destined to be gay at birth has yet to be demonstrated. It is believed to be a combination of genetics, womb environmental factors, hormones, and psychological factors. Nonetheless, sexual orientation is no more a choice than race, eye color, left-handedness, or what country you were in when you were born, so it's a valid comparison.

The people who used scripture as a defense for Jim Crowe did so incorrectly. The scripture clearly states that homosexuality is sinful. Look, I 100% disagree with your views, you 100% disagree with my views, but I'm not the one angrily calling people names. We won't agree on this, so it's not worth continuing the conversation.
