—Not at a funeral they’ve lost a couple football games and are not where they want to be.
—Special teams stood out and they did a good job on kickoff coverage. The return teams weren’t good enough especially kickoff return.
—Defensively the worst game of the season. Baylor had a really good plan. They played their best game of the year but they didn’t play well. They neutralized the front and got the ball out fast and mass protected with double teams. Lack of takeaways are hurting and they didn’t tackle well in space.
—Offensively they struggled up front especially on the right side and it’s frustrating.
—Bye week it comes at a right time. They’re spent emotionally and it’s a frustrated group. Everybody is frustrated and nobody likes losing. He knows the fans are frustrated. They are in the entertainment business and when the product isn’t good the people have an opportunity to complain. But it’s not entertainment for them it’s their livelihood and they have to find a way to fix it. They’ve had some good things happen but they’ve lost three games at the end and then Saturday. You have to repair what you can fix. You have to readjust the plan moving forward and there is a lot of football left. Brown said you can’t approach it as doom and gloom. It’s easy to lead when things are going well it’s hard to lead when it’s going poorly. You have to lock in and focus on your people. It’s going to be a challenge but it’s doable.
—WVU made mistakes in all three phases and some of those were repeated mistakes. He didn’t think there was a bunch of loafs. He said they didn’t strain compare to other games.
—Offensive line is the hardest position to get right and it takes time. They have not performed well enough on the right side. Zach Frazier and James Gmiter are playing really good football at a high level but everybody else they have to play better. Some of it is a technique and some is schematics which is on him. What were playing is what we’ve got and they’re ready. Those are the best they’ve got and they have to get better.
—Brown isn’t trying to make any big announcements he wants to listen to his players and get some thoughts and have a plan moving forward for the next six games.
—Goose Crowder is coming along and has added good weight. He’s had two really good Mondays in a row. Justin Johnson has had some nice runs and they’ll work him hard this week. Tomas Rimac isn’t ready to play now but he’s progressing now. Hammond Russell has done a good job and so has Saint McLeod and Aubrey Burks. Andrew Wilson-Lamp has been doing well at special teams. Davis Mallinger played about 10 snaps and can really run. Jaylen Anderson is just now starting to practice and doesn’t have a big enough body of work to comment.
—Middleton is no longer with the team at this point. Kerry Martin was sick.
—Jarret Doege competed hard but got smoked on a couple missed blitzes. But he missed some in the red zone. Garrett Greene was good in the run game but he didn’t do a good job in the pass game. He took a drop and ran and didn’t go through his progressions. The receiver group is playing well and he has to be able to find them.
—Brown believes the dip in production from Leddie Brown is a little bit of everything. The early part of the year they’re not doing a good enough job doing things and he’s left some yardage out there too.
—using recruiting evaluations yesterday had 10 of 11 on the road and on Thursday and Friday. They’ll be actively recruiting. They’ll have 32 available and it helps and they’ll be able to take some high school linemen, a linebacker, a transfer and high school DB and more. Brown believes from a development standpoint when you’re dealing in the transfer world you’re going to have some hits and some misses. They’re not going to go transfers in large numbers.
—They’re not going to see them get 15 transfers.
—Brown knew this wasn’t going to be a quick turn. But did he think they’d be 2-4? No. He thought they would play better and be able to close out games in the fourth quarter. He knew it was going to be a process. They made some turns last year but defensively Tony Fields was a difference maker and erased some issues last year. He thought they’d be sitting at a better record than two and four. He does believe with all his heart they will get there.
—There’s things that are non negotiable from a program standpoint and schematic principle standpoint and they aren’t getting off that. He hasn’t lost belief and they have to reflect where they made mistakes. How do they continue to build on the positives and what needs to be fixed and hiding what the deficiencies are and how do you readjust? You can’t continue to do the same things if they aren’t working so how do you go about that? Are there young guys that give them a better opportunity and how do you adjust the plan?
