For old Don Nehlen-era fans, PSU May have been an exciting upcoming game/rival. For me in the Rich Rod-era, I always felt VT, Louisville, Pitt, and Rutgers were the main rivals and even USF was a quality rival back then. I never felt Cuse was a rival but I can see how they could have been during Nehlens years.
I'm a Nehlen era fan--remember a few before but not many.

Louisville, never felt they were the same level as the earlier Syracuse, Pitt, PSU, national champion level programs back then. Heck even BC was a strong program back then.

Syracuse and WVU were pretty heated back then with alot of questionable calls going against WVU and for the Orange.

When was that?

Pitt never won in my lifetime...
Pitt was a national power in the 70's and into the 80's. Really that entire Eastern Independent Group was very strong and prominent in the national picture. Pitt used to be great. Not sure how they fell off and never recovered instead of becoming an Ohio State like program.

For that post you did to break it down, yes one time here lately does not fit your breakdown for the current era. Iowa State shares a lot of common things with WVU. If you saw my first post in this thread I didn't break down eras and included vpi.
I'm saying that IMO even during the BIG 12 period, VT has remained as a very important rival to WVU fans. Moreso by far than Iowa State. Even if they only played one game until this season.

Greg, you really need to stop being such a snowflake. You're always getting your feelings hurt when someone doesn't agree with you. So, you resort to name calling and other childish behaviors. Grow a sack and be a man for once in your life.

Went over to Spitt's board to see how many WVU fans were there. Answer - 1. And that was only in a post that mentioned WVU. We have more Spitt fans here just counting all your iterations and incestuous kin at 3:00 A.M. on Tuesday nights than ever frequent the Spitt board. If that isn't evidence of being over Spitt, what is?

Of course, with the low reading comprehension you possess, and not grasping the thread title, you ended up confused and made yourself look foolish. Hope you'll take the advice and learn your lesson.

LOL at the asshat that thinks I care what he thinks 😂.

“what are WVUs top five rivals”...........1. Pitt. 2. Who cares. 3. Who cares. 4. Who cares. 5. Virginia Tech

Non homer handles listed Pitt first of course. Therefore, “ I thought everyone here was over Pitt”.

80’s and 90’s
1980's - 75-36-4 (bowls 3-3)
1990's - 37-74-1 ( bowls 0-1)
2000's - 74-49 (bowls 3-4)
2010's - 69-61 (bowls 3-6)

They have been average team since 1981 season when they went 11-1 and beat Georgia in Sugar Bowl and finished #4 in the polls after starting the season #1. Since then they have only finished ranked 6 times and the last time finishing ranked in a season was 2009 at #25.

WVU is 18-10-2 vs Pitt since 1981. WVU overall is 40-61-3. 42 of Pitts 61 wins came at the empty stadiums of Heinz, Three Rivers and Pitt Stadium.

Ultimately it all comes down to what you consider a rivalry. I consider a rivalry to have 3 elements. First, there needs to be a history of multiple games played on a fairly consistent basis. Second, there needs to be at least some parity in the W-L column. If one side is not winning at least 1 out of every 4 games, keeping in mind the context of history and not slumps, it's hard for me to consider that a rivalry. Third, there needs to be some degree of a fan passion against the other team and their fans. This is usually bred from geography and fanbases consistently interacting with one another. That's why the top 4 is fairly clear with those factors in mind, although the order is debatable.

1. Pitt
2. VT
3. Syracuse
4. Maryland

The 5th spot is hard as I don't see any team that fits. PSU, Rutgers, and ECU are all out because disparity in the W-L column. Marshall is out due to lack of history and W-L disparity despite the obvious animosity between fanbases. UVA is out due to lack of history at all despite geography and fan animosity. Kentucky is in the same boat as UVA.
Louisville had potential in the BE 2.0 days, but not enough history there to count. If WVU joins the ACC, I could see that happening though. Cincinnati has the same problem as Louisville. All the current Big 12 schools lack history with WVU. So I guess I can't really name a 5th for WVU.

“Over Pitt”? The Pitt - WVU series will always be no. 1 with (I would say both schools) or a close second to Pitt-State Penn series for Pitt fans.
Most older Pitt fans will say PSU is Pitt's biggest rivalry, younger fans (myself included) view WVU as our biggest rivalry. We hate you, you hate us. period. We should play every year.

This was a big hit on the Blue Lot so let's do it here.

Give me what you view as WVU's top five rivals. It can be what you think are the top five overall or what you personally have the most interest in following. While I'm interested on a personal level, I will tell you there is an important feature coming and this info will help me deliver that to you in the best way.

Whatcha got?

1. Pitt
2. Virginia Tech
3. Penn State
4. Syracuse
5. Maryland

Honorable mention: Miami, Fl

I Missed it Allen. Who was arguing Pitt and WVU weren’t average. I’ve saying it for several years. That’s actually why I started using the term “homer”. Some people around here act like WVU is a Top 20 program and coaches are dying to come coach here. They act like WVU has Top 20-25 recruiting classes year in year out. WVU and Pitt are in the same boat basically when you peel the onion back.

Not more than Pitt though. So if that was your thought process, then it should of been Pitt, not Vpi

Some WVU fans in the Southern part of West Virginia consider the cHokies to be WVU's biggest rival.

I'm a homer and don't give a **** who knows it. But I also know the limitations facing any coach or player that comes to WVU

WVU recruiting has picked up the past 2 years as they finally got a sober coach and one that doesn't snort coke.

WVU has always been the average type team. They average recruiting numbers 35 to 40 every year. Currently 2022 recruiting ranking is 23rd and 2021 was 41st 2020 was 37th, 2019 was 48th in recruiting thanks to some last minute heads up by Brown to save from 60th place ranking by Holgorsen. The last 2 years and WVU has finished it's best recruiting in Big 12 Finishing 4th in 2021 and 3rd in 2022.

It's not that WVU can't get great players here it's that they can't get them in abundance like perennial top 10 teams.
