What pizza joints are around for Dave Portnoy to review in Starkville?

We all know Brandon Walker is a sex symbol, but it's also an honor to welcome El Presidente himself to the Jewel of the Golden Triangle. With SEC nation coming, I hope there is a good showing of students in the amphitheater for the Barstool show as well. Barstool is huge to the younger crowd more than most even realize, and we sure could use a boost with recruiting students.

We need to look good for both the blue hairs sitting on the couch watching SEC Nation on satellite, and the under 40's streaming the Barstool show on YouTube. Georgia is walking into a difficult place to play, and I really do believe we can win this one if we show up.

We are BACK as a program, and literally three plays away from being 8-1 and top 10 in the nation. I've reminded everyone I come in contact with about that. As State fans, let's not forget that. Lebby knows what he is doing, and is clearly learning from his own coaching mistakes with a team who could have packed it up and checked out after all the heartbreak this year. As of now, they have not. I'm emotionally invested again as a fan, which is dangerous but hopefully they don't let me down.

Stromboli’s is the best pizza in the country
I do agree it's very good. It's not Dave's style he likes, it's the opposite but it's great pizza indeed. It got me through college and I'm happy to hear it's still open after the scare we had a few years ago.

I assume Dave will review there, and my prediction is that he will give it a 7.1 or 7.3 because it's not his style. We will see, but that's my prediction. He doesn't get into the 8's with pizza that is not his style, even if it's "good pizza". It's just so hard to compete with Pizza in the Northeast down here. Every time I travel to that area of the country, the Pizza is way better than anywhere you can find in the south. Just a fact.

Dave's might get a 6.8.

Looking at Boardtown Pizza and Pints reviews, the pizza might get a decent score due to the char. Strombolis is too heavy for Portnoy, Dave's would be considered a Football Pizza.

Yeah I remember Daves (the dive bar one) pizza was pretty good when I was in college, but I honestly didn't know what good pizza was back then. I was too young to realize what life was all about. Is it actually good now?

Dave (the El Pres one) likes the New Haven style which is thin, charred, and has a solid undercarriage with no flop.

Dave is a NY style pizza guy, thin foldable crust, without trick toppings with a char on the bottom. Boardtown will likely be the closest to that. I'm personally not a fan of Daves and have never had the pizza from Stromboli’s. Dave has a soft spot for small time family businesses, so Boardtown and Dave's will probably score a low 7 or high 6.

I'm a fan of Boardtown's pizza.

He's missing out then. Chicago style pizza is in a league of it's own.

Thread Hi-Jack.

Has anyone ever eaten a Hunt Brothers Pizza? I've never even considered it but you see that sign in front of every podunk or shady gas station across the South.

Apparently they sponsor a NASCAR?! Had no idea they were that successful.

Hunt brothers is actually fine if you get a pizza and not just the slice that has been sitting under a warmer for 30 to 40 hours.

Not sure every location will do pizza to order (I've only had it once while in a podunk area for lunch, so it may not be representative, either in the options available or how good it was), but it was comparable most of the chains. I actually would say it's closest to pizza inn or pizza hut.

ETA: Also, Hunt Brothers is actually really successful. My understanding is their business model is to go to those podunk gas stations and offer to provide the equipment to them and train them if they will buy the ingredients (or possibly just the entire pizza; not sure if there is anything assembled on site) from Hunt Brothers. The gas station owners like it because it's another source of revenue and they don't have to make any up front investment, and then Hunt Brothers gets a recurring revenue stream with guaranteed margins for nothing more than the cost of a pizza oven and warming set up.

Yes, it's absolutely disgusting gas station pizza made by gas station employees. Wouldn't touch it again.

Can’t wait for 615 to start a thread predicting the closing of Mississippi State because Dave portnoy didn’t give a good rating to any pizza in town.
I'm just excited to have the Walker-Portnoy ongoing feud come to Starkville. It's great entertainment and that's what they want. I'm way too old for most Barstool content, but those two are a hoot.

I’ll see your Hunt Bros. and raise you a Hungry Howie. Shittiest pizza on the planet.
Possibly, but they delivered until 2:30am in Athens, so we ordered almost every weekend. To us drunks it was manna, and it was our first encounter with different crust toppings/options.

ETA: After a George Thorogood concert at the Myrtle Beach House of Blues, I broke the hotel bed in excitement when I realized there was a local Hungry Howie's and we wouldn't starve. My taste buds have probably changed in the 20 years hence.

The store up the street from my work sells Hunt Bros. I used to go in and get a slice a couple of days a week. If you get it when its fresh, its about as good as a Digiorno or one those types of "upscale" frozen pizzas. If you get it once its cold or sat under the heat lamps, you'd do just as well to eat the cardboard box it comes in. Its serves as "gut wadding" but thats about it.

Hunt Brothers is basically Domino's to me.

If BFW has any input over what pizza place to sample I'd hope he chooses Stromboli's. My favorite restaurant in Starkville by eleventy million miles

Stromboli's used to be a sponsor of one of his first shows, can't remember the name now. Cowbell Corner?

He only does reviews for cheese pizza and there's not really a great cheese pizza that I've had in Starkville. Every pizza joint in Starkville should be working on their cheese pizza recipe pronto.

Man that was an elite family dining experience back in the day. Pizza Hut really screwed the pooch when they got rid of that. Just a peak in to downgrade of the American family and society nobody sits around a table any more for a fast food type service anymore. It's all take out now.

Reminds me Vicksburg used to have one still over by the mall. Does it still exist?

Not familiar with boardtown but daves had the best pizza back in the day. Stromboli's was overrated and always too long of a wait. A good New York style thin crust is hard to beat snd I don't think anywhere is Starkville has a good one.
