The key to this thread will be to see how many people who think Schiano would be a great hire will instantly dismiss Wannstadt, despite Wannstadt being better at Pitt during his six years than Schiano was at Rutgers in the same six years. He said something on a BTN broadcast weeks ago that he would be interested in the Illinois job. I think he would not be a poor hire. That would be a hire I could live with.
Would hire him in a heartbeat. Guy really has done nothing but win. Was 42-31 with the Dolphins. His last three years at Pitt he was 9-4, 10-3 and 7-5 and he gets fired? Like him on the B1G networks. Seems fun and engaging. We could do a lot worse.
Wanny was a little like Franklin - great recruiting, but subpar coaching. He always seemed to bring in great classes, but then they never seemed to do that great. Part of that was Hafley, for sure - but I don't think I'd mind 3 years of great recruiting and subpar coaching if we could then bring in a coach that could do something with that talent.
YE Massey ratings for Pitt under Wanny
2005: 62
2006: 55
2007: 64
2008: 18
2009: 16
2010: 32
In the twinkling of an eyeYep. Recruiting rankings:
2005: 38
2006: 21
2007: 26
2008: 28
2009: 47
2010: 33
Still never finished better than 5-2 in the Big East, and went just 42-31 during his time at Pitt (26-12 over his last 3 years).
Even in 2009, with a 16 massey rating, Pitt managed to finish third in the conference including a loss to 5-7 NC State, and ended up in the Meineke Car Care bowl
He could bring in talent, he just never seemed to get all the pieces going the right way on the field.
At this point, I'd take that in a heartbeat. Bring in the talent, have the decent seasons with head-scratchers, and then bring in the next guy in 3-4 years when Wanny is ready to retire. Still, though, I think a lot of that recruiting prowess fell to Hafley, who was with him from 2006-2010.
I agree, and it's obvious he wants to coach again.would take him over many of the names that being bandied about on this board.
I agree...watching Fludd whisper in the opposing coaches ear after every loss is getting frustrating.Compared to Flood, heck yeah. Instant legitimacy. At least I can picture Wanny shaking hands with Urban Meyer and Jim Harbaugh.
Serious question, who would you rather have running this program for the next few years, Wanny or Fludd? IMO, it's a no brainer, Wanny would run circles around Fludd with a high school team.

Funny how smart Wannstedt and DiNardo sound now that have beenHe said something on a BTN broadcast weeks ago that he would be interested in the Illinois job. I think he would not be a poor hire. That would be a hire I could live with.
NO, NO AND NO!!!He said something on a BTN broadcast weeks ago that he would be interested in the Illinois job. I think he would not be a poor hire. That would be a hire I could live with.
What does Wanny have to do with Schiano?I guess from those responses, you guys are against Schiano's return as well? That you probably would prefer to hire someone like a coach moving up to P5 or a coordinator from a P5?
