What would you think if Wanny was up for the job?

Pornstache is still waiting for Jabu Lovelace to throw the football.

GS ran the "Jabu Package" 9 times in a row in one game vs. Pitt and he never crowded the box once on D. Not once.

You guys have o be kidding me with this crap.

They are the same coach - at best. If you want Schiano then Wannstadt - who outrecruited him at every turn should be your guy. Or Edsall for that matter - dude ggot better results than both of them post-2006.

Still want Schiano but Wanny can coach. Last three years at Pitt he went 9-4, 10-3 and 7-5. And he got fired? PITT got what it deserved as four, five coaches later, and they still are not as good. He also had seasons of 9-7, 9-7 with the Bears and 11-5, 11-5, 9-7, and 10-6 with The Dolphins. He can recruit and engaging on the B1G network. Think he would make Franklin and PSU squirm a bit too.

Agreed, for a guy with a pretty good track record he sure gets a lot of ****. He's not elite, I get that. He has been pretty successful at various stops though.

Wanny was pretty good at Pitt, just look how much they have fallen since he was fired. Look at the extreme turnover rate of their HC job over there since he left, look at their win-loss records since he left vs when he was there.

He was fired because idiot Pitt boosters forgot that it was no longer the late 1970's, early 1980's.

The current Pitt HC looks like a good one. But, it took a long time to find him.

Our former AD (fired by Nebraska and latter by the new Pitt Chancellor) fired Dave which was not supported by many of the Panther Nation. However, that is when the Pitt coaching carousel began and we have had a hard time recovering from that mistake.

I was never in the camp that wanted to see Dave let go. He was a great recruiter and good representative for the University. I think Dave would have made a good HC with a little more support ($$$) from the administration.
With additional financing Dave could have brought in a better staff with a Top Notch OC and DC. Don't know if Dave wants to coach again but would not be a bad choice for many programs.

Other programs have made or might make the same mistake (Nebraska and LSU).

I think Pitt now (finally) has the "Right" head coach, a new Chancellor (totally supports Pitt sports), and a new AD (tasked with the mission to make it happen). The additional money from ACC Conference membership will now support the mission. All things are in place to return Pitt football to a future Top 25 program.

I think Rutgers will keep Flood for another year but tell him to make some staff changes. It will be extremely difficult to attract quality people (OC/DC others) knowing the coach maybe on the "HOT SEAT".

I still wonder about Julie.

Lets see how it goes.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Rutgers has been forcing Flood to make staff changes basically since year 1. I dont think its on Julie. Reality is that in the past we would have kept Flood for five years regardless and then hired on the cheap (see Schiano - very low cost - we got lucky). We are still operating on a Big East budget for another three or four years with the same donors from before. Its a major constraint.

I'd take Wannstedt in a heartbeat over Flood. The question is, would Wannstedt come here? He was a Pitt alum.

Why? - he didnt recruit as well, or get as good results.

1. Schiano knows the landscape here better- recruiting and admin

2. Schiano won most of the head to head battles and a few of those were blowouts in GS's favor.

3. Schiano had less of the field issues.

4. I think Wanny only really had two good seasons- 2008 and 2009, went to three bowls in the same time we went to 5.

Wannstadt recruited Joe Flacco, Darrelle Revis, LeSean McCoy, Dion Lewis, Larry Fitz, and Aaron Donald.

Dude recruited circles around GS.

But to be fair, he should have won more with those players. I could live with the hire. Dude can recruit. But I wouldn't slam dunk love the hire.

Wannstadt is exactly the type of retread hire we don't need. He's not bad or anything, and if you're ok with sending a bunch of guys to the NFL while going 7-6 every year, than Wanny's your guy.

FWIW, I'd rather take a chance on finding the next great coach than settling. I also think RU is a lot more of a rebuild job at this point than folks care to admit, and is Dave Wannstadt the guy you want rebuilding a program?

Some Rutgers fans have a weird infatuation with horrible, fired coaches.

Not so much that so much as we know that if they even fire Flood they're going to try to pay the next guy peanuts so we need to be realistic about who that is. I would also say that while Wanny was not a runaway success and not who I want, he was fired unfairly at Pitt.

Head to head, Schiano went 4-2 against Wanny (from 2005 thru 2010), one of the primary reasons for RU's resurgence during that period. Going to bowls consistently happened because we were beating Pitt and Cuse, 2 teams that had consistently beaten RU prior to GS. Prior to GS, Pitt was a much better football program than RU. Better history and access to a rich recruiting territory. Why did Wanny recruit better classes than GS? It was much easier to recruit to Pitt than post-Shea RU, everyone has to agree on that point. He was also an ex-NFL head coach who was/is a minor legend in western PA. But GS got better results from those classes that were ranked lower.

I thought Wanny did a very good job at Pitt and was surprised he was fired despite having winning records. But he has now been out of the game since 2010 (an eternity in coaching) and is no spring chicken (63 and will be 64 before coaching his 1st game in 2016). We could do worse than him but I'd prefer someone much younger.

Don't even start with Randy Edsel. That is plain ridiculous.
