Who do we pitch tomorrow?

That's exactly what is leading me towards Ross. I don't think we have to announce anything until starting lineups are turned in. It is courteous to announce it earlier, but so is trying to wait out a rain storm when your opponent is about to make it to Omaha...so 17 em, let em find out when we trot a guy out there.
Do we have to announce a starting lineup? It's a continuation, so we're not allowed to change the lineup... I'm 17'ing clueless. I'm beginning to think we have to announce a pitcher. I could see Intense Bastard leaving it to our fans to convince their fans and their players to think Holder will pitch tomorrow and announcing at the very last second Mitchell.

The lineup has to start the same unless you pinch hit for someone...but as for pitching, I would think it is no different than a mid inning pitch change, we don't have to tell anyone that until the guy is running out there, so I'm hoping it wouldn't be any different. But I honestly have no clue. As with most things MSU...just expect the worst scenario and hope for the best.

It's hard not to be optimistic when I know that they've thrown their ace, their 10-1 senior, and their 4th round closer already and we have 2 of our 3 best pitchers in our back pocket. We're discussing pulling a fast one on them but completely ignoring the fact they could do the same thing to us. 17 em.

Ha, good point. You just made me feel a little better when laying out the scenario, thanks.

I have a feeling that Holder told Butch and Cohen tonight that he wants the ball and is fully aware that it is on his shoulders to get 6 outs and not give up 2 runs. He is a beast, and he will get it done.

I know Holder personally... not only does he look like Kenny Powers, he's got the real life "17 you" attitude that accompanies it. I could see him doing it.

For the record I'm all for pitching mentalities being a real thing, but didn't someone start their closer and relieve him with his ace this weekend? That sounds brilliant if it worked. The point is the best players want the ball when the game is on the line, and you've got to give it to them in whatever way possible.

At one point or another every pitcher on staff has started a high school game. They've all been there in the not-so-distant past. It's not a foreign concept to them. If we were sending in Holder for a 9 inning game, I could see it being a distraction, but he was there tonight and he saw Rea hit a bomb, he warmed up in the bullpen, and he knows that the entire fan base is pulling for him for just TWO innings. That's closer pressure that closers live on.

Yep.

Good stuff by the way. I don't suppose you have talked to Holder tonight have you?

Haha not good enough friends for that, although I did wish him a happy birthday (sunday was his birthday by the way).

Super nice guy, but I wouldn't want to be on an opposing team. We caught him on TV at one point this season getting the final out of the game and yelling some obscenities at the guy he struck out. I love that from a player. If you're the best, damn right you should be cocky. When you're the best, cockiness is called swagger. Because of that kind of stuff I think he's up for it tomorrow. From a coaching standpoint, send in Ross. Play it by ear.

That's all I'm going to say on the matter. Summer school and shiznit.

You pull him after the first hitter reaches. All you are looking to do is set up your closer, not ignore him. Most closers don't like working to establish the tone of a situation... they want to ride the adrenalin wave already established, even if a runner is on base. That's all he needs... and that's all we are talking about. Holder WILL close the game out.

There's no way you don't march Holder out there from the get-go tomorrow. The potential tying run is on deck if we don't expand the lead. If the score is still 5-3 in top 8th, it's Holder. Otherwise you second-guess yourself all the way back to Starkville if it falls apart in both the end of suspended game and game 3. Ballz out time.

Being we still have to bat in bottom of 7th I wouldn't let Holder or anyone know who was starting and see him and whomever else to pen who we started hitting then bring him in. I wouldn't tell him this morning and let him sit on it all day. Even though he probably expects to get the ball I think that slight factor would get him into normal routine.

Holder's been chomping at the bit to get in the game for 2 days now. You can see it in the dugout every time they pan over there. There's no way he's not going to demand the ball when this starts back up.

As for announcing who we're throwing, Girado is still the pitcher until he's replaced. So no, we should not have to announce it beforehand.

5, 6, 7

5. Left hander
6. Switch hitter
7. RH
8. RH
9. RH
1. LH
2. RH
3. LH
4. RH

So I was wrong actually...maybe we let Ross throw to the lefty to start things, and then either try to let him finish the 8th or bring Holder in for the #6 hitter.

There is so many scenarios that lead you in different directions. We want to do whatever it takes to not get the top of their lineup up there with less than 2 outs in the 9th. Logic tells you Holder is our best bet, but who knows what Cohen will do.

I was fixing to post this. Also looking at what they've done:

5. Fisher DH LH 0-3 so far in this game
6. Gragnani 2B SH 1-3
7. Howard SS RH 1-3
8. Towns 3B RH 1-2
9. Irving C RH 1-3
1. Papi LF LH 0-4
2. King 1B RH 2-4
3. McCarthy RF LH 0-4
4. Downs CF RH 1-3, HR

Looking at this, I'd probably start with a LHP and trot out Ross for at least the first batter. Depending on the outcome of first batter would determine my next move. As long as he's getting outs let Ross pitch, but the first sign of trouble or anyone reaches I'm going to Holder immediately. If Holder comes out, the first 2 batters he faces will bat left and while I have confidence in Holder to cut them down, I can only imagine the "matchup" scenarios John lost sleep over last night.

Holder....I understand there are mind games of which pitcher to use and when...

But if it's up to me, I don't try and out think the sitaution. Put in the big timer and let him get the job done. It's that simple.

In the end, I still think we can/will score 1-3 more runs ourselves. We have at least 2 more ABs... Renfroe up with 2 strikes (probably a K here), then Pirtle, Rea, et. al. Would love for us to come back and put a 3-4 spot on the board in the bottom of the 7th.

Reminds me of Brantley. Once when he got 2 strikes on a hitter the hitter stepped out of the box and was milling around. Brantley yelled at him to get his *** back in the box so he could finish striking him out.
