The biggest difference is just how much higher the valleys where most people live are here in the northern mountains compared to the Smokies. Just as an example the football stadium elevations of the big 3 in the SMC is 1560 feet for Murphy, 1960 for Swain, and exactly 2000 for Robbinsville. Here in the high country Mountain Heritage is at 2600, Mitchell at 2960, and the big winner and probably the highest elevated football stadium east of the Rockies is Avery at 3760. Sorry for the rambling don't know how we got off on this. Anyway my thoughts on the game is my gut says Murphy by a td, but my homer of a heart says Mitchell breaks Murphy's 20 game home playoff win streak.
If we are strictly talking about the sport of football, then the discussion is right on....As for the school with the highest elevation, it's got to be Highlands with an elevation well over 4,000 feet, but the Highlanders don't have a football team, so I digress...
Now as far as the game, it's going to be a hard-nosed, gut-wrenching, dirt-eating, frozen-tundra type of game, and both teams have experience in this situation which makes it even tougher to call....
Of course, I will be rooting for whoever emerges from this game in the state title game next week....
If this was the Mountaineers first trip to the Western Final, I would give the edge to Murphy, but it's not, and this team has a lot of leftovers from last year's 1AA state runnerup finish, which makes it even more difficult to pick a winner since Coach Gentry is still roaming the sidelines for the Bulldogs.....
Both teams have very good coaching staffs, very good QBs, and playmakers on both sides of the ball....
As with most games in cold weather, the ball will be hard to hold onto, catch and kick which also plays a big factor in the outcome...
I'm not going to pick a winner, but i will say that this game will likely come down to a missed extra point or a late turnover that is converted into points....
Should be a great atmosphere for a great 1A Western Final!
Good luck to the winner in next week's 1A Championship!
