Who would you call a home run hire?

Anyone that is a proven winner with a previous history of program building would qualify, at least in my opinion. Show me a coach that can take what on paper appears to be only average talent and compete with the big boys on a regular basis. That is the type of coach we need at UK. We are never going to be able to recruit with the Alabama's of the world, so we have to have someone capable of doing more with less. Bobby Petrino certainly comes to mind. That guy can take a roster full of 2 and 3 star kids and whip the *** of teams that have much higher rated recruiting classes. Tom Herman at Houston is another example. Jeff Brohm is another. Both of those guys can compete well above their fighting weight. Jeff Brohm last year at Western took mid-major talent and went 11-2 and broke into the top 25. Gary Pinkel (formerly of Missouri) is another one of those guys. Even our own Rich Brooks had some of those traits.

A home run hire is not always a flashy hire. I'll take substance over flash any day of the week. Had Mitch likewise used that sort of criteria to guide his decision, we might not be in this mess now. Stoops was to some degree a rather flashy hire, given he came to us from FSU and is the brother of Bob. But he was also a risky hire because he had no history of building a program or being in overall control of a team. We really should have hired Petrino when he was available. Doing so would have all but guaranteed UK would have achieved some sustained success. Petrino was as close to a sure thing that existed. But because he might not qualify as a Sunday school teacher, he was passed over for our current disaster.

Jim tressel. Jim tressel walking into living rooms of players in Ohio I feel like could be quite beneficial

Ok. Not the sexy name you may be looking for, but what about a coach like Mike Sherman? Lots of experience. College, pros, front office. Knows what it takes to compete at the highest level. After getting let go at A&M, most likely has something left to prove. kinda reminiscent of Brooks but with a better resume?

Yeah, we've been there four years and it's paid off handsomely

These clowns can't coach though. I think Ohio has to be part of the equation, but this staff has shown no ability to keep the lockeroom bought into their system. Four straight years of multiple games where they team shows no fight. This staff has more problems than talent level.

I would add Bronco Mendenhall to the list. But he was just hired at Virginia last offseason, so he might not be much of a possibility.

Art Briles
Im telling you! You could set up a contract with him and make sure in his contract he pays a percentage to Abused woman charities or whatever. Let him right his wrongs. Say he gets 2.5 mill a year just throwing number out there 250 grand goes towards abused woman organizations. I'm mean this can be turned out to be good for Kentucky and woman who have suffered abuse and rape etc... Make him hold clinic every off season for abused woman. People you can turn all things around and make them positive. You just got to think outside the box.

In no particular order: Meyer, Saban, Kelly, Harbaugh, Dabo, Patterson, Herman, Stoops (not the one at UK), Peterson, Shaw, Dantonio, Petrino, Cutcliffe, Fisher, Richt. None of them are coming to UK.
So of guys that might be obtainable (in order): Tressel (don't care for ol' sweater vest but he's an elite football coach, elite), Fleck (up and comer, great enthusiasm, gets it, not at WMU long), Brohm.
Ingtriguing: Schiano
No's: Briles (damaged goods), Butch D (way too much baggage), Leach (he can pirate a different program), Miles (what does he look like without top 5 talent).
No F Way: Mike Sherman

Todd Graham. I thnk he only has 2 yrs on his contact and only makes $2.8 mil/yr. has had 10 win seasons 5 of last 10 yrs at Tulsa and Arizona St. Defensive background but worked w Malzahn and Rich Rod. One of the better, experienced guys we might actually have a shot at getting.

UKErik had a great post earlier on how to fix the program. I agreed with everything he said in the post. At least let him be a consultant.

BTW Brohm is my pick as well
