Why do the Bengals always crap the bed?

From Twitter:

@KNegandhiESPN: Stat of the day - Teams are 1-427 in the last 5 seasons when trailing by 17+ pts in the 4th quarter.. The lone win? the Bengals yesterday..

Wow! Crazy stat.

Got together with a few neighbors to watch the game. 2 of the 10 threw in the towel when the Seahawk ran 70 yards through the Bengals-should-be-stopping-him-at-some-point-shouldn't-they? defense. 2 more gave it up after the Christmas-comes-early fumble recovery trot to the end zone, which put Seattle up by 17.

BUT... the remaining 6 of us still felt like the Bengals would make a game of it, at the very least. 3 of that 6 (and I put myself in that group) actually thought that they could win. Sure, we were the ones that were consuming the most alcohol, but I don't think that had anything to do with our abundance of optimism.

WHO-DEY!!!

I kept watching, but only because I didn't have anything better to do. But if I had saw the stat that teams were 0 for 475 when down 17 in the 4th then I guess I would have taken a nap and let the wife watch a Lifetime movie or something.

I don't know how good the Bengals are, and I am a huge fan of Peyton Manning. But I'd take the Bengals over the Broncos all day every day this year due to the fact that a) I like the Bengals D and b) Manning has the raggiest arm in the NFL at this point.

Denver is the worst undefeated team by far.

Another horrible, depressing Sunday. How can you only beat the Buffalo Bills by two touchdowns? I was feeling somewhat okay when the Bengals were up by three touchdowns late in the 4th, but just another gutless response to give up that meaningless score.

This is the worst I've felt about a 6-0 NFL team in a long time.

Just read that Dalton is two wins away from setting the NFL record for most road wins in a QBs first five seasons.

Bengals fans (myself included) have been too hard on the guy. As someone pointed out already, he's 27 years old and that's how old Rodgers and Peyton were when they got their first playoff wins. He may blow up again and revert, but the season is almost half-way over and he's a legit MVP candidate. I'm just waiting for the inevitable: one bad game and the majority of the fan base screaming OLD ANDY IS BACK!!!!

I've been hard on Dalton for his performance, but more so for his attitude. He never took any responsibility for his poor play. I have no respect for that. It looks like his entire attitude has changed and I'm all for it. However I want to see how he handles adversity before I go all in on supporting him. It's easy when you win like the bengals have been. How he handles a loss will be the true measure in my mind.

Yeah, there'll always be bruised shins from getting off/on the Bandwagon. I don't blame anyone though, it's just what we're used to, having never been a consistent SB contender... and feeling the coulda/woulda/shouldas about the 2 times they did make it there.

So far, Andy has thrown 14 TD passes and he's also run a couple in... with only 2 (or is it 3?) INTs. Works for me! Andy has had his issues in the past years, but he's also had key guys with injuries -at the wrong time, too. All by itself, we've seen the huge factor of having Tyler E. on the field, having missed all 2014 with the injury. Hopefully, the Bengals stay healthy throughout this season.

I've been following the Bengals for almost 40 years. I'd say this is the 7th or 8th time I've felt they had "it." Feels good. Doesn't mean Brady and the Patriots won't be standing in the way at the end... but I'm going to go ahead and enjoy it right now.

Just reported on the radio:

Live post game interview shows a lot of bare Bengal butts in the background.

Since it is during the NFL's Breast Cancer Awareness promotion, maybe they're just offering a little something extra for the ladies.

I hope this thread goes on from now till eternity. If you witnessed the great bengals of 93-03 decade you would of thought for sure the bengals would of lost for sure today. Im hoping for a bye and a playoff win, but sky's the limit. I hope the bengals Crohn's disease gets worse.

Teams are only dubbed losers until they win. How many years were the KC Royals a baseball joke. The Bengals have the pieces, and will just need a little luck. If Cincy was in the NFC, they'd be the favorites to make the Super Bowl right now; NE and Denver are both clearly better than the Packers.

Since 2002, only 2 super bowl participants from the afc was not quarterbacked by brady, manning or Roethlisberger. That was the Ravens both years.

The Bengals picked a bad time to be decent. If Dalton can continue to improve, the majority of the core of excellent skill players can stay together (green, eiffert, jones, bernard) and the defense can just stay respectabel, the Bengals can be right there with the steelers as next in line after brady and manning retire. None of the other teams in the afc appear to be doing anything (including the colts) that looks like they'll be a sure bet, without a transcendent qb.

Jet's are now one of the most injured teams this year and the defense may have been overstated, so I'll root for everyone's Bengals if the Jets continue this downward spiral.

But I feel bad for you guys also, because no one is beating the Patriots. Brady dumps it off too quick for opposing defenses to get to him. I honestly don't think the Bengals come close to beating them, but I guess that's why you play the game. One of the few teams who stand in the way of New England, rooting for you guys to beat them if it comes down to it.

Some Steelers players are complaining about the injury to Bell... as if it was intentional. Having watched many Bengals carried off the field through the years, when vs. Steelers, I don't even want to hear that BS.

Anyone else remember this one:

And that's why Mitchell was flagged for taunting. Getting into AJ's grilling and telling him he was next.

Eifert with the hat trick. Good adjustments at the half for the O and the D. 8-0. Works for me!

Manziel wasn't even that bad... great scrambles all game long. There were some drops, and a couple tough-but-still-should-have-caught by his receivers. It's a nice change to watch others have the issues.

Bengals are great this year - too bad that they'll likely have to beat at least one of NE or Denver, possibly on the road. AFC is top heavy this year. And don't count out the Steelers. Improving defense and obviously some of the best talent on offense in the game. If they can get in the playoffs, they're a tough out.

It's a bad sign when you have to count on your TE for all your touchdowns. It's been a brutal start to November for the Bengals hopefully the rest of November gets better.

Ben hadn't played in a month, wasn't anywhere near 100% and Bell had 10 carries before he was injured. But, it was a good win regardless. We'll see if they can do it again when it actually matters. History proves they will break your hearts.

Previous years have nothing to do with this year's team, IMO.

They had also never won in prime time, never been 8-0, etc., etc.

That being said, until they win a post season game, they will always have that over their heads.

If they stay healthy they could make some serious noise. But there are other great teams this year. Like Vandalay said, it is very top heavy.

And the part about Big Ben being back and it being the first game they had all of the big 3 playing for the same time.

The Steelers are 1-8 with Ben his first game back after injury. I suspect he'll be much better going forward. Best spot for PIT is the 5 seed and a matchup against AFC South champ...what a terrible division.

Also, they only had Bell for half of that game as a Bengal player ended his season for the second year in a row.

I can see the criticism of Lewis not winning a playoff game, he had division winners in 2005 and 2009 and they couldn't win at home.

But in the Dalton era playoff games, the Bengals were decided road underdogs in three of the four losses. The San Diego loss was a crap-fest, and they probably could have beaten Houston in the 2012-13 wild card round with a better game from Dalton, but they were over matched in 2011-12 and played a skeleton roster in Indy last year.

I think it was a legal hit but it seems like some of the Steelers think he celebrated the injury. I don't know if that's true but it seems like there are knuckleheads on both teams.
