Why is the staff not getting/accepting their bowl bonus?

Symbolic gesture IMO. NU can afford the bonuses, it's not about the money. It's about trying to show that 5-7 is bad, coach do bad, no money for coach. I don't think it will equate to any missed meals given the cost of living in Lincoln...

Legally, SE would have to allow the bonus, right? This is Riley and his staff turning them down, correct?

Good job by Riley and Eichorst.

Now let's hope that these coaches never again get a jolly slap on the back for deciding to turn down bonuses for fielding a crappy team.

Not exactly Bobby Knight giving back his entire salary in 2003, but the right move.

I'd guess that Eichorst gave Riley the option of 1) No bowl game (SE declines any invitation, like Missouri already did) or 2) Accept a 5-7 bowl invitation, but forgo bonuses.

Pretty simple decision there.

One thing to consider here with us accepting a bowl bid:

Depending on when the game is played we could be the first team in college football history to lose 8 games in a season -

Holding that record is alone reason enough to consider not going

what it means Einstein is that since this is the first year of expanded bowls and first year a 5-7 team can go to a bowl we could be the first bowl team to end up with a record of 5-8

Gotta love when a post in a thread doesn't even address the topic or move it forward.

Good to see a simple gesture like this by SE/MR. With SP you would've seen a opaque answer as to why there'd be no bonus - ringing of his hollow vision most could see right through.

Gotta love recycled trailer trash.

And no mention of Osborne paying Pelini in 2008, recycled trash gonna recycled trash.

Did they even win it?

I wouldn't of asked the question otherwise, not surprised you didn't care in 2008 but do now.

@JohnRossEwing did Pelini receive his bonus for (cough) "winning" the 2008 B12 north division?

http://journalstar.com/sports/huske...cle_ddbcb62b-27ab-553c-b2e9-294b67f3cd07.html

Pelini's original 2008 contract had a base salary of $1.1 million and included bonuses for:

$150,000 - appearing in the Big XII Conference title game
$250,000 - winning the Big XII title
$150,000 - appearing in the BCS Championship Game
$250,000 - winning the BCS title game
up to $250,000 - based on measures of academic success by his players.

NU tied Missouri for the 2008 North division with a 5-3 conference record and a 8-4 regular season record. NU's three conference losses that year were to #4 Missouri , #7 Texas Tech (OT, in Lubbock) and #4 Oklahoma (in Norman). NU defeated Clemson in the Gator Bowl to finish 9-4.

That spring, Pelini's contract was revised with lower bonuses and a larger base salary, including a bonus of $50,000 for tying for the division title, and $100,000 for appearing in a non-BCS championship bowl game -- which Pelini also retroactively received for these achievements in 2008.

Osborne (who doesn't hold a law degree): "I guess theoretically we wouldn't have had to, because it wasn't written into the contract. But we felt that was something that was just an oversight. We felt that was something that needed to be addressed. We're trying to do what we think is the right thing, the fair thing."

http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2009-04-01-2606241072_x.htm

Mike Riley chose to forgo receiving a similar bowl game bonus based on the accomplishment of a 5-7 NU team being one of 128 FBS schools chosen for one of the 80 bowl game slots.

Perhaps NU's chancellor and NU's athletic director (who do hold law degrees) never considered the necessity of contract language to exclude a bowl game bonus for a 5-7 team being chosen for a bowl game.

Perhaps because that hypothetical was beyond anyone's range of possible outcomes.

Similar to 2008, contracts are supposed to be construed in accord with the parties intent. I think forgoing a bowl bonus for a 5-7 is something that needed to be addressed. I also think Eichorst and Riley are doing what is the right thing, the fair thing.

Nice spin, but the athletic department came out early and said no invites would be declined.

Pelini's original 2008 contract

I don't need a link, quite obvious others do.

See above.

Any interest in moving the thread forward when you respond?

For example - Would be interesting to hear a response contrasting the SP era with SE.

Recycled trash go recycled trash.

Wasting time with recycled posters, HOL gonna HOL.

So is the concern that Riley might finish 5-8 and that would become a new shorthand way to refer to him for eternity based on his first season at NU?

Examples:

"Riley is a breath of fresh air." 5-8

"The loser limp is gone." 5-8

"I am confident the future is bright because I see it in the eyes of our players, coaches and staff and I am impressed by what I know is going on behind the scenes." 5-8
