Why is this Penn State story coming out now?

Please help. What have I missed? Everything I am seeing and reading is referencing an alleged event that happened in 2002. Did a victim come forward on Sunday? I am very confused as to how this becamesuch a media firestorm at the present time.The events definitely seem to deserve all the mediaattention they are receiving, but why now?

And that was the first bit of information that had to be given over to investigative reporters. I think they kept it quiet until the last possible moment. I have no idea how rumors did not get out, I guess it was something so heinous that you just don't talk about it to anyone.

ETA: I did not see Slickdawg's last post, I guess rumor did get out but nobody would believe it.

Sandusky was caught red-handed three times and nothing was ever done

1. 1998 a janitor saw him in the shower with a boy

2. 2002 a backup qb turn ga saw him on a fri night

victim 1 told his hs councelor after he started hs in 2008.
3. Sandusky laid on top of the victim after he fell off a rock climbing wall a couple of times and a high school wrestling coach caught them cuddled on the weigh room floor and thought it was odd, but sandusky said they were working on new wrestling moves which i guess wouldn't qualify as a raping, but still and odd situation to be in...
