Why was Manny Diaz's defense so terrible at TX...

and relatively good at State? Its not like he got dumber when he headed west. Here's a few thoughts:

1. Spread teams/Hurry Up- I think for the most part Def Coordinators try to outsmart this offense, instead of focusing on fundamentals (like tackling).
2. Player evalutation- TX has recruited some high rated HS talent, but TX HS football is so advanced compared to most states I think this is skewed. I think in a lot of ways, they recruit really great HS players that have peaked, because the Longhorns are NOT LOADED with talent, like in years past.

I think Diaz is a good coordinator, I think Wilson is still learning. Our defense wasn't great (I personally don't like the scheme), but we looked a lot like TX this year.....we just didn't have the players.

I feel like we get a couple of good JuCo DBs to fill in the gaps and we will be back to a top 25 defense.

DBs were not States's problem on defense this year.

If Quay Evans, Nick James, and Jordan Washington aren't ready to play next year, we're going to be in the same boat. We have to get pressure on the QB with our front 4.

Jordan Washington isn't a pass rusher. He's a space eater. He's more of a Boyd than Cox. But to your point, we will need all 3 of those guys to excel or we will be in the same boat again. I think Chris Jones will have an immediate impact for us next year as well.

That's why I said "fill in gaps" regarding DBs. Our DL should improve, barring everyone keeps their head straight. I think it's just part of the coaching philosophy to earn playing time, thru practice, offseason, class, etc.

Can't remember what game it was in.

But I saw one really good move this year by a lineman and it was by Denico Autry. He went wide outside and spun like a top back inside and got a sack. Only time I saw any of our starting rush ends do anything that resembled some sort of technique move or anything else to gain leverage on the tackle guarding them. All bull rush crap that really never got to the QB or even put pressure on the QB to make an early throw.

You mentioned it, and I will expound upon it. No technique is why our DL got gashed by the running game by so many teams. Our DL can't shed blocks off initial contact by the OL, and we never get in the backfield to disrupt running lanes. We have to get that fixed if we want our defense to be disruptive because we had far too few TFL and big momentum changing plays. Teams were almost always looking at 2nd and medium if they ran on first down because we just couldn't make a big 1st down play. If our starting DL can cause some problems in the opposing teams backfield, it will help out our back 7 immensely.

I don't think it's all of either's fault.

Honestly, I think our talent on the DLine was vastly overrated. Boyd easily got neutralized with double teams. Autry was a late bloomer. Smith and Jones showed flashes, but were inconstant. I have no explanation for the Quay debacle, but I bet off the field issues limited his PT. And the rest of our line looked pedestrian. Secondly, I don't think anyone on the Dline stepped up and took leadership responsibilities like Fletch did. Lastly, I agree that our schemes and personnel decisions weren't optimal.

I don't think Wilson is a bad dline coach. I do agree that his coordinating skills are lacking. Ultimately it was a lot of little things that added up and caused us to suck on D.

I just find it hard to believe a guy that worked for Bob Stoops for 5 years doesnt teach fundamentals very well

Texas didn't have Pernell McPhee, Fletcher Cox, Chris White, K.J. Wright and Johnthan Banks. People forget the NFL talent we had on that team. Those first four START in the NFL and Banks will be a 1st rounder as well.

I think you're absolutely right on Texas talent evaluation. Sometimes I think they do nothing but look at star ratings.

Because it's not true. Teaching fundamentals is actually one of the things Chris Wilson excels at.

The bottom line is that when you're facing the man across from you, you either have to whip his *** or he whips your ***. In the games we lost, we took more *** whippings than we gave. The reason for that is actually a number of things - primarily talent - but the lack of being taught the fundamentals is not one of them.

The litany of problems with our defense is well documented. Mullen gets paid a lot of money to effectuate change, its his program. If he does not see to it that change is made, it could eventually cost him his job, regardless of whether that is at MSU or somewhere else. He better get the defensive side of the ball fixed, however it must be done, or we are going to be very fortunate to sniff 6 wins next year.

The problem at Texas this season was youth. No, not the "we're young" excuse, it was the fact that Texas started and played more true freshmen than any other team in the BCS. Mac played a big gamble this season by playing them.

I would guess, we needed to recruit his guys, but they were young and maybe got out of position against explosive offenses.

How do YOU know he doesn't "teach" fundamentals? Do YOU know them? If not then how do you know he didn't? Let me tell you from HANDS ON PERSONAL EXPERIENCE.....I know WHAT the fundamentals are and I KNOW he teaches them. I can to or teach you how to post intelligently about defense but you still might put dumb **** like this on the board. I was there 2 ft from Wilson as he climbed all over Carmon for being lazy and popping straight up. I was right beside him when Pernell was getting too wide and not containing the edge. I was on the sled when Fletcher wouldn't keep his punch inside and tight and I was there when he tore all three of their asses up.

I did call you dumb he was correcting Pernell FOR being to wide and coming upfield but you "SEC coaches" can tell you that.

All I'm saying is before you call someone dumb you really need to know a few things about fundamentals. Did you also know a retired coach that works with coaching staffs Bama, Florida, Florida St. etc. would love to work with us but we refuse to call him? Oh by the way when our last d line coach was at State he worked with him and you could see results.

So did Auburn. And they suck. Diaz has been a good coach for multiple teams at the college level before. So has Van Gorder. That tells you all about talent vs. star ratings. Texas' and Auburn's talent levels are down.
