will Facebook be relevant in 5 years?

Seems to me (a simpleton) Facebook has turned into a dumpster fire of political name calling & trashing everyone who doesn't believe what we do. (Which by the way nobody on earth believes everything we ourselves believe)

Maybe in 5 years it will be the "can't believe we used that" thing.

I think it will be relevant, but changed quite a bit. I'm going to reference music to what I think is going to happen

Just like music... Music is still relevant as it was in the beginning. The only change is how we take in that music. We went from 8 Tracks... to Cassette Tape... to CD's... to MP3's... to Pandora....

So what I believe is going to happen, is the format is going to change, but the theory will always remain.

Its not Facebook that's the issues, its the combination of (a) the proliferation of "partisan" and/or "conspiracy-oriented" web outlets that produce ridiculously false and/or biased stories that feed the biases of their readership (think Infowars), (b) the ease with which these types of stories can be "shared" on a social media site such as Facebook, and (c) the "sheep-le" who buy into this nonsense and fill up their - and your - feed with these ridiculous stories. Facebook is simply an application that will be a good or bad as its users make it - unfortunately many of its most active users are slowly losing contact with reality. Its very easy to unfriend or turn off certain people in your friend group in terms of what shows up in your feed so you don't have to sift through all of the garbage if you don't want to.

It isn't going anywhere soon, as the 30 and 40 somethings still use it a lot. But the younger generation from what I have seen don't seem to use in the same percentage as other generations. It will gradually fade away.

I prefer every Tom, Dick, and Harry not knowing my business, and I don't care to know theirs.
It's a ridiculous concept for a lot of people who must be bored to death. I unfriend you all.

Never understood the allure of FB, but there is no freaking way it is going away. Waaay to many narcissists out there, multiplying by the day. I opened a FB account, but by my 7th friend request I decided it was to much and cancelled it. Who needs 7 friends anyway?

...Apparently Fraternity Guys do. They actually pay to be friends there. I don't see the allure to FB either. Just lots of memes and Selfies. I suppose Stalkers might enjoy it some as well.

I would think people would get annoyed by the targeted marketing,. I swear, you search something on the web and all of a sudden your FB timeline thingy is filled with ads from them.

Kind of scary how much you can be tracked and such on just keystrokes.

Not judging...but maybe everyone should get better friends. Just kidding.

But seriously put them on unfollow and get on with your life if it bothers you so much. It's not that complicated. I am enjoying the irony of b****ing about social media on a social media site though. Good stuff.

Facebook isn't the problem. The people who are on Facebook are the problem. There is very little political talk among my Facebook friends, and it's not because people aren't interested in political issues. It's because they know that most people don't want to discuss controversial issues on Facebook.I personally am very interested in political issues and politics in general, but I don't discuss them on Facebook very often because I don't think it's the proper forum for it. The few friends I have had who have discussed political issues too much for my liking, I just blocked from my feed. It's that simple.

Not just facebook. It is social media in general, but I doubt it is going away anytime soon. I agree with @NikkiSixx. I love Twitter. I get so much info quickly, I love it.

The concept of Twitter has always bothered me. Maybe it's because I hear of people following 18-year old kids far too closely. Just way strange to me.

Sorta like the video of the man on the microphone fawning all over Lindsey and Holmes making me feel Ill. That guy really needs to get a life.

Not a fan. Never understood the appeal. Same for twitter. I think both could be good for certain things, but now do nothing more than destroy marriages (fb) and incite hatred (twitter), and contribute to the misguided celebrity worship in our society.

They have made millionaires and "role models" out of the kartrashians. Think about that.

I do find it amazing though that a college kid became a multibillionaire by convincing well over a billion people to give up their privacy to advertisers and governments. For free no less.

Yep, fewer and fewer people care to hear both sides of an issue. I find Facebook to be a place where I can keep up with what family and friends are up to, but the political posts, the "you won't believe what happens next" shares, and the endless little league updates get tiresome.

I like Twitter because I follow all of the news outlets, and my feed is essentially on demand news. I don't follow the recruits and youngsters.. I think that is creepy as well.

I am in education… And for the most part if you are in high school or middle school you think Facebook is for dinosaurs and you stay away from it like the plague. Which means in due time it will completely go away. Snapchat now gets more daily usage the Twitter, which is amazing. Instagram is going to be the new Facebook. Snapchat is already worth billions of dollars and will continue to be used at a very high Rate. It is faster and easy.

To answer the original question - yes. Facebook has an active user-base of about 1.65 billion (with a B!) in 2016, so nearly a quarter of the world's population. It has almost 1.1B daily active users, while "competitors" Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter have 400M, 150M and 140M, respectively. Remember that social networks have no borders, so high school kids in America only represent a small piece of the pie.

It has its pros and cons (it is almost entirely what you choose to make of it), but what will keep Facebook alive, and likely continuing to grow, is that it is always changing. Not necessarily for better or worse, but adjusting and bringing in more users than it drives away.

Facebook was OK when it was just for college kids. You could join groups and meet new people on campus with common interests. It went downhill when they started letting anyone join.

Now nothing good can really come from Facebook. But a lot of bad can - people losing jobs for posting something controversial, married people cheating, cyberbullying, online predators, spreading false rumors, etc.

For those familiar, check out what the Chinese are doing with WeChat. It is a messaging app, business people exchange numbers via weChat not business cards. Need to split dinner? No problem just exchange money to each other over the app. They don't hardly need ATMs even in China. Buy products, get coupons, meet others in the area, order a car for a ride - all one app. Of course some people would be leery of privacy issues but the convenience of doing all your business on your mobile device in one platform is pretty amazing.

That is where Facebook will go vs dying.

Which go back to Facebook 5-10 years ago. It was fun & hip for college kids, then it bled into high school, and then finally adults. It was ruined the minute adults became aware of it.

Snapchat, Instagram, & Twitter are still relatively simple outlets, although Twitter is gaining some ground in the category of annoyance with its 'promoted' ads.

The trouble with these social media outlets is that they change constantly just when you've become comfortable with them. Many times, IMO, for the worse.

I do believe Facebook will fade out somewhere in the next 5-10 years.

I think Twitter is most likely to fade out. They've stalled on growing active users and brands are starting to give up advertising on the platform because they can't dollarize the value.

Snapchat is on the come as it is where young kids hang out. Instagram is also on the rise not only for the audiences but also because brands see the value. But good news for Facebook they own Instagram

Facebook isnt going anywhere. Its up to you how to handle it. Get rid of the BS and keep up with family and friends that are too far away. Facebook mostly sucks though. I have a tendency to keep a smaller amount of friends than others.

Yes, and before Twitter and Facebook there was Friendster and MySpace, among others. Now Instagram and Snapchat are the rising stars. Although they might start out to look like a genuinely useful tool, they all seem to get turned into a pile of garbage in the end and fade away. Call me backwards, but I don't feel compelled to be connected to a social network of people I know little or nothing about, and expose myself to all the elements of whacked-out human behavior that is encountered on the internet. I imagine, though, that there will always be some evolution of Facebook and Twitter, et al, for those who feel there is gap that needs filling.

It won't totally die off… It will just start to linger not be used as much. It's not the form of communication that it once was for people. I also agree that Twitter is in a really rough spot right now.

I expected Facebook to go into a rapid decline a few years go, but the site seems as strong as ever. The company made a number of smart strategic decisions years ago that (real names, no pornography, news feed and alerts) that made it appealing to the grandparent crowd. Teens may use other social networking sites/apps (snapchat, etc), but those social networks aren't going to be as universally acceptable. Competitor sites do appear from time to time but people seem content to stick with tried-and-true Facebook. In five years I expect Facebook to still be around with similar usage levels.

One can only hope... fb is a huge reason we as a society have declined very quickly.
FB is a new communication medium that will evolve. Whether or not FB continues to be at the center of the contibued adoption is to be determined. Make no mistake about it, social media is here to stay.

The history of technology and it's adoption is always a double edge sword, the problem is though, the pluses and minuses are dramatically diverged today.

Personally, I don't use FB and have instructed all family members and friends to not make any association of me on their FB page.

God I hope Facebook doesn't go away. How will I know what people are having for supper or when their new baby just crapped all over the place. Where will I get to see all of the drama?

I THOUGHT always talking about yourself was considered narcissism. Apparently not on FB....and why is it that those that should least post faceys or whatever post them the most????
