I have a bad feeling about DuBose if we got him to go to MSU.

I think he's a guy that has been to the mountain top, and he had some problems, and now he was at Millsaps where he seems happy and content. I don't know if putting him back in the frying pan would be good for either one of us.

He was in over his head as Bama's head coach, but he was a heck of a defensive coordinator. And I don't think it would be too hard to get him from Memphis. Unless he's an idiot, he would jump at the chance to go from a defensive line coach at Memphis to a defensive coordinator at an SEC school.

that if Ed Orgeron and Melvin Smith were recruiting head to head that the difference between whether or not a guy chooses one school over the other wouldn't be skin color. I'm just saying that I've never seen anyone come out and say I'm going to MSU or whatever school because the guy that they have recruiting me is black. I think it's more along the lines of playing time, what position would I play, and how much money is in your bag.

Recruiting is only one part of the equation. Above all else, the DC needs to be an X and O's kind of guy because he's the one calling the shots on defense. If he's a great recruiter, great. But if he's a crappy recruiter but can call a good game on defense, I would certainly take that.

Keep the guys that are better at recruiting as position coaches.

this was my original quote...

"And is preferably black...but energy and X's and O's come first"

And you have never heard a recruit come out and say they went somewhere because the of who was recruiting them? Identifying with the coach recruiting you plays a big part- and some of those guys use skin color to help them- both black and white. I'm not saying it is the only thing that sways them, but I have seen it make a difference in the Sherrill Era

Manny Diaz (MTSU)
Tim DeRuyter (Air Force)
Tim Banks (Central Michigan)

All three are coordinators for teams ranked high in scoring defense and total defense. Two of them are younger and on the rise. One of them is black. One of them is Latino. None of them are walruses.

I admittedly don't know much about Tenuda but Notre Dame's defense is one reason why Weis is no longer the coach there. Their defense was horrendous. Why would we want him?

JWS himself said on BDJ that Melvin was the best recruiter he ever worked with. He said some guys recruit well enough that you don't worry about their coaching. Melvin was one of those guys. Now, at DC, you need to be a damn good coach. But you had also better be able to recruit. In other words, you better be a cross between EJ's coaching and Melvin's recruiting. That would be the perfect DC.

why is it preferable that he's black? That was my point.

Ron Cooper was black. I wouldn't take him back over Manny Diaz because I think he could help land one or two good recruits. Especially since I know that I have Melvin and Tony Hughes on my staff not to mention David Turner if skin color does matter that much to recruits. It's not like we have a lily white coaching staff as it is. Heck, a guy like Diaz could probably help us get some WR's from Miami and get us in a part of the country that is rich in talent.

My main point is basically this- hire the best guy you can regardless of skin color. Nothing helps recruiting better than winning.

One thing about Melvin Smith- and I think this is why he is such a good recruiter- is I have always heard that he is really good at developing a relationship with the players mothers. I know that can be twisted a lot of different ways, but the fact of the matter is I think Melvin knows what and who these players listen to. The guy is a good recruiter who happens to be black.

And when you say that you've seen a player commit to MSU because of the coaches skin color helping them, have you ever heard a player actually say "I chose MSU because Melvin Smith or whoever is black." Or are you just speculating that? Because I find it VERY hard to believe that a player would ever come out and say that.

Hell, white people already can't jump, and now we can't recruit.

I'll be waiting for your post in February when some guy commits because of Melvin Smith so that you can gloat about being right when that wasn't even the point to start with. I know it's coming.

A lot of you guys are talking about Dubose, but it was Oliver that made that Bama defense what it was during the 90's. And he sounds hungry to get back into coaching by the way he sounds when he's on Finebaum. I know he's living in Alabama, and possibly around Tuscaloosa, so he's close enough to come on over. This guy would be huge.</p>

<span style="">And before someone says something, I agree that Mississippi State DC job >>>>> Memphis State DC job</span><span style="">

DuBose Resigns as Head Football Coach at Millsaps College</span>
<p class="MsoNormal" style=""><span style=""> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style=""><span style="">JACKSON</span> <span style="">- After leading the Majors to four consecutive Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference championships and two NCAA Division III playoff appearances, head football coach Mike DuBose has announced his resignation from Millsaps College to take an assistant position at the University of Memphis.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style=""><span style="">"Coach Dubose brought outstanding organization to our program and built character in the scholar-athletes under his charge," said Tim Wise, athletic director. "And although we are grateful for the winning records and conference championships, we are equally appreciative of the lessons of discipline and integrity that he modeled for our scholar athletes. Mike always supported our athletes in their education and was able to create championship teams while instilling the important virtues that are hallmarks of the Millsaps education."

Millsaps hired DuBose in 2005 to fill the vacancy at the defensive coordinator position alongside head coach David Saunders, whom he succeeded a year later as the Majors' 19th head coach in the program's 85-year history.

The Majors went from 2-7 to 7-4 in his first season in 2006, won their first outright league title in 15 years and made their first appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs in 31 years. The Majors went on to post consecutive winning seasons at 8-2 in 2007, a school-record 11-1 finish and No. 3 ranking in 2008 and 7-3 mark last season.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style=""><span style="">DuBose finished with a 33-10 record (24-2 conference record) during his four-year tenure with Millsaps, building what was a struggling team with two winning seasons the previous 12 years into a four-time conference champion in as many seasons. His .767 win percentage is first all-time at Millsaps, while his 33 wins are second behind legendary head football coach Harper Davis, who went 140-78-4 in 25 seasons with the Purple & White.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style=""><span style=""> "I've thoroughly enjoyed the five years I've been here, one as an assistant coach and four as head coach, and the opportunity to work with so many fine young men, " DuBose said. "It's been an outstanding experience for myself and my family, and we've loved every bit of it. There will always be a part of me with Millsaps."</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style=""><span style="">"We are extremely thankful to Mike for the excellent work and service he provided to our football program, and we wish him all the best as he returns to Division I coaching," said Wise. "An extensive search for a head coach will be made to find a replacement who will continue the successes of this program on and off the field."</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"> </p>

Its no secret Melvin Smith is the ultimate bag man and I wouldn't have it any other way. The man is good at what he does.

Def. Coordinator?? No. Hell of Recruiter?? Yes. He should stay on staff.

I would love to see Dubose. He is a great coach and after his fall has rebuilt his life and his reputation. He would bring great character, maturity, and wisdom to the program.

is whether he will recruit at the level required. I think he may be at an age and stage of career where he would expect JLD treatment. Could be wrong, but that's my thought.

But, I'm a little concerned with him being older and Patterson is very hands on with TCU's defense. I wonder how much of their success is more attributable to Patterson rather than Bumpas.

But, the upside to Bumpas is we wouldn't be down a 'stache after Torbush's departure.

43 years old,he's been a DC before (Baylor), went from DL coach at MSU to DL coach at Chicago Bears to currently DL coach at LSU. He knows Mississippi and coaches know him. From what I remember, he recruits well, too.
