Lots of good examples over the last few years of wrestlers being willing to bet on themselves since AEW came around. Makes it a lot easier to do so when there are two companies with money and they don't both have the same vision of wrestling and what makes someone a star in a wrestling company.
Used to be if you flunked out in WWE it was virtually a lock you were never going to ever see a big money contract in wrestling ever again. It wasn't impossible to make it back to WWE, but it was very unlikely. WWE used to always say go do what Drew McIntyre did but Drew McIntyre was an exceptional case and not the norm. Like Ilja Dragunov is someone I don't see WWE ever wanting back, he just does not fit that roster whatsoever.
Not to say there wasn't other ways to make big money before AEW, but it required really grinding away on the indies and doing it all on your own with supplemental income like merch, meet and greets, etc. Didn't have a company to do all your merch for you and arranging all those other things unless you wanted to work for cheap in TNA and a dying ROH or work in Japan.
And now I think it's even easier to get back to WWE now than it used to be with WWE being so willing to sign anyone with a pulse who leaves AEW.
