I don’t really think that hits the exact issue though. IMO, it’s the handling of these issues by academia and the media. Let’s flip the script and say that all of these professors and student groups at these universities had spewed similar hatred, except, instead of it being directed at Israel, it was directed against the LBGTQ population. The outrage would be OVERWHELMING. It would be the lead story on every MSM station, with calls for heads to roll for everyone involved. Has there been outrage over the current situation, yes. Does it pale in comparison to what would happen under the scenario that I suggested? Undoubtedly. If you seriously think otherwise, you’re not being honest with yourself.
If someone says "Russia shouldn't bomb a daycare center in Ukraine" does that make that person a hater of all Russian people? I would say no. Much like saying Israel shouldn't turn off water to a territory that is majority children doesn't make someone anti-Semitic.
Of course some idiots praise Hamas- much like we have prominent Americans who praise Putin, Kim Jong Un, Xi and other killers. We have people who of course dehumanize and villify and LGBT and other minorities.
The issue becomes the conflation of any criticism of Israel to the point where we are told *ANY* criticism of Israel is unacceptable (when the Israeli gov ministers are literally being shouted out of hospitals for their behavior by their own people) and secondly, we have a situation where some people are trying to throw the First Amendment in the trash can. We can abhor Hamas and its defenders and we can (hopefully) abhor the people who say Palestinians should be wiped out which has been said by some "pro-Israel" protesters too, BUT they have the right to say it here in the US and they have the right also to face consequences which has included revocation of job offers already. That is consequence culture, and I do find it interesting that people who defend these consequences (which I am OK with personally) take umbrage when people who praise, say, Kayne West, get cancelled and criticized.
Finally, it is clear that what some are looking for now is a post 9/11 atmosphere where *ANY* introspection or criticism of the "good" side in the conflict gets shut down with vehemence. We saw how that worked and lots of Americans, be they those that died in Afghanistan, Iraq, or being a turban wearing Sikh at a gas station paid the ultimate price because certain pols and their media allies could not help themselves. We already had a 6 year old Palestinian American stabbed to death by his landlord who admitted listening to political radio all day. We know better, we lived through that, people need to step back.
