Ahh 401ks. Look at the dropoff from Clinton to GW Bush, From Obama to Trump. My 401k took a pounding during the W Bush years but it came roaring back after that.

How do you think Trump's second term is going, regarding market returns? On track with his first term?

What would a $100,000 401(k) have become under each President since Reagan?

Using annualized returns over each full term:
President$100k Invested at Start of Term
Reagan (8 yrs)~$335k
G.H.W. Bush (4 yrs)~$172k
Clinton (8 yrs)~$364k
G.W. Bush (8 yrs)~$69k
Obama (8 yrs)~$335k
Trump (4 yrs)~$184k
Biden (4 yrs)~$165k

What would a $100,000 401(k) have become under President Biden's last two years?

A $100,000 401(k) invested in the S&P 500 would have grown to approximately $157,900 during President Biden's last two calendar years (2023 and 2024), driven by back-to-back annual total returns of 26.29% in 2023 and 25.02% in 2024. [1, 2]

Performance Breakdown
    • 2023 Return: A total return of 26.29% grew the initial $100,000 balance to $126,290. [1, 2]
    • 2024 Return: An additional total return of 25.02% on that new balance resulted in an end-of-year total of roughly $157,896 (nominal value before fees or adjustments). [1]

Thank you President Trump!!
Why would I thank Trump? I worked for the money and I invested it.
Are you wanting to thank Trump for the inflation caused by tariffs and Trump's dumbass war? Get ready for a lot more pressure as he ramps up his deportation of the people who staff our care centers and scrub hospital floors. Are your 401k gains outpacing the rise in your cost of living, especially what you pay for health care?

Everyone is probably pretty pleased, as I am, but imagine where the market would be without tariffs and Iran War. The market is moving in spite of Trump, not because of him.
Compared to the returns under Biden's last two years that I posted above, the returns under Trump stink.

What is the S&P return in the last year?

The S&P 500 trailing 1-year return is approximately 18.19% (as tracked via major index instruments like the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY)) up to July 2026, while the total return for the previous full calendar year (2025) was 17.88%. [1, 2]

Performance Breakdown
    • Year-to-Date (YTD) 2026: ~8.3% to 9.34%
    • Full Calendar Year 2025: 17.88% (Total Return with dividends reinvested)
    • Trailing 12-Month Return: ~18.19% [1, 2, 3]

Mine has been soaring. Change investment firms.
I have an 80% return since 2020 but it's been going downhill during Trump's second term so it's not a firm/broker's fault. We were doing much better under Biden's last two years and that economy was gifted to Trump on a silver platter only for him to blow it up with stupid a.ss trade wars and a real war of choice.

The midterms are this simple:

Biden and Democrats inherited a poorly managed pandemic, massive job loss, and a ruined economy from Trump in 2021.

They added jobs every month, the pandemic recovery went better than in peer nations, and by 2024 the US economy was dubbed the Envy of the World and was so strong it improved the entire global outlook.

That was what Republicans and Trump inherited.

Then, they slammed the brakes on the economy, killed job growth, drove up inflation, made healthcare far more expensive, kicked one million children off of food assistance, started an illegal war, angered our allies, and made the nation sick from cuts to health inspections and disease monitoring, not to mention the rampant corruption that has enriched the president and his family with billions of dollars.

The midterms are your chance to change this.

It is time to vote those who have failed us out of power.

For the record my post was from February. However, mine has been soaring lately. I work for an investment company. Change investment firms.

Why are you laughing dpic?
I assume because what you said was funny.

For one "soaring" is not reality. You work for an investment firm and know the market is currently wobbly.

Second, since you work for an investment firm, you know 401ks are not portable, right?
Say dpic works for FedEx, he is not able to just "change investment firms" because the firm he is forced to use is dictated by FedEx, not him.

I am not sure why I am telling you things you clearly know, because, again, you work for an investment firm. And I believe you.

There are different types of 401k’s and some of them are portable. SEP’s for example

And who was President over the last year presiding over this solid return?

Don’t stress Dickpic….we’ll have Republicans running the show for the foreseeable future, so things will keep humming along nicely.

I have limited choices in my 401k so that's not reflective of the returns I would have seen in my brokerage account if things had stayed as stable as they were the last two years under Biden. I was knocking it out of the park in 2023-2024 and I've been basically treading water since last October, and if it does reach a high, it's immediately erased by some new dumba.ss decision by the Clown in the White House. But sure, he and this ineffective Congress will make it soar any day now - two weeks probably.

My last two days were a lot better, but the last few weeks were rough as I have a lot of tech exposure.

However, MSFT finally bounced (bought at $395 in February) and my AMZN RSUs went up $20.8K gain today. Felt a lot better going into the weekend like that.

well, 14% is not all bad.

I don't know why you guys get all worked up over gains from one month or even one year. Investing is a long term gain. Like most of you, I'd think my portfolio, which is conservative by most standards, has been down or up by over $500 k in just the last year. It was similar during Biden, trump 1 and Obama.

Going out on the limb when the market is up or down for a day or month isn't productive. Just for example, August is a HISTORICALLY a below average month for stocks..no matter who is presdient

This was one of the worst Julys for the market in a long time.

This market is primed at the pump for the 2nd half the year.

Prices were lower, inflation was lower, gas prices were lower, unemployment was lower, and we had less wars.

I don't know about "everything". I mean, there was the furry epidemic that was part of Biden's policy so that was put to an end, thank goodness.

Holy #$##. 80% seems awfully high. I'm getting around 16% return on mine over the last 3 years. I think it was closer to 20% 2020-2024 although it tends to hover in the 16%-20% range, other than the W Bush years where it nosedived for a while.

It’s cherry picking to just use Biden’s last two years. He inherited a market that climbed from 2500 to 3800+ in the 3 quarters leading up to his inauguration. The market was then basically flat for two entire years. It was a horrible stretch of returns.

S&P is up from ~5800 to 7500 since Jan 2025, or about 29%.

Should be measured from Nov 2024 not 2025. The gains from Nov 2024 to Jan 2025 were due to Trump winning election, not due to Biden admin policies.
