I agree that Zoom does not seem to be certain how he fits in with this team at this point, but to say that Wilkins isn't an SEC level guard is simply wrong
little rock: 4-12 FG, 2-8 3FG
texas tech: 3-9 FG, 2-7 3FG

33% from the floor, 26% from three. 71% of his shots are threes. no versatility to his game. volume shooter. bad shot selection. turnover prone...7 in two games.

Did you actually watch the game? His defense in the ladder half of the first half literally turned the game around. His back-to-back killer three is put up to any hope of a comeback. He also had key assist as well, and that was from games that he didn't play all that great

i did i guess you didnt. wilkins have played about 55mins in two games. the positive moments you mentioned are probably 5 mins in those 55. if you think that is good enough for an SEC guard than we will just agree to disagree.

Some guys just look at stat lines and the bad stuff. They pay zero attention to the whole game.

It's the usual suspects. They always pick one player to bash relentlessly. If you look at the Tom Leach highlights, he shows up a lot either when he scored or making assist or defense.. He had some horrendous turnovers and there's no excuse for that but I think people focus on that and ignored everything else. If Pope can learn to incorporate his outstanding mid range game that adds another dimension to this team.
Some people do bash which is stupid and others have legitimate valid concerns for his play. He was one of the major reasons why we were down and lost our ten point lead. When he was on the bench we played better and grew our lead. That is a valid and verifiable evidence. He will play but as of now he should not be the starter and Mason and Wilkins deserve his minutes more.

going 1-7 for 24 minutes with 3 turnovers and just ignoring it because in the final minutes you hit 2 threes, then telling other people they pay zero attention........wild

I can't wait to bring this thread back to life in January.

You guys just never learn, do you? Do you honestly think a chiseled, athletic, 6'6" guard, is just going to struggle all year long?

It's f*cking October. You guys would have a point if this was February. How weak minded can you be? Heck, look how good we looked even with Zoom struggling, just wait until he develops. Jesus.

We have some of the dumbest fans, but it's great entertainment honestly, especially when they try to use the tired old "give me my plate of crow". Oh trust me, it's coming, you guys make it too easy.

He will find his groove, sometimes it takes longer for things to come together. He averaged almost 16 points a game right at 5 assists and around 4 rebounds a game. We haven’t had those numbers from our point guards lately. There was a lot of interest from multiple programs for him, coming to Kentucky from somewhere involves a lot more pressure and demand. His second game here you have a bunch of people all over him saying he can’t play. All of those others schools can’t be wrong about him, how about we support him instead of beating him down.

His defense and decision making off screens changed the whole game. Went to bench for bad plays and came back better. Sign of a good player. Offense isn’t only part of basketball.

Milan is just coasting right now. He passed up several shots he normally would take. He will let those fly in season. He’s a senior he knows these games mean close to nothing so work on driving it a little more and stuff. He also will get post ups like he did when him and Moreno inverted and Moreno post fed him.
We better hope so.

you mean the multiple times on defense when he selfishly cheated off his man in the corner to get a steal but gave up wide open threes.....you are right. all conference guard for sure! lol

Love a good hater. I can tell you just casually watch the game and don’t see what’s going on. Wilkins on ball d at the top changed the game when he came back in. Especially when they kept trying to go middle PnR. That’s why at one point they went away from the man he was guarding and started trying Mason. Heaven forbid a guy go for a steal. Immediately means he’s awful. Milan left his assignment first 2 possessions on the back end PnR for dunks. Guess he’s trash too.

You read only what you wanna read. Like I said, he did much more special on the defensive event that helped turn the game around, but you be you.

He’s a look at the box score guy and then say someone sucks. I said the same as you. His defense after he got benched for bad plays changed the game. He got aggressive on the PnR coverage and even made them go away from attacking him at one point. He made some bad plays early but really changed the game after the first 10 mins.

For the millionth time. With the exception of the player each year that is paid crazy money. Pope doesn’t get the players he wants, he gets the guys that he can get. Basically scraps. Do you think if Pope had his choice of a transfer to run his team he would have picked Zoom? Zero chance

What exactly does he bring to the table? He’s great at dribbling the air out of the ball 35 feet from the basket, then handing the ball to a non-guard who comes to rescue him, then disappears for the rest of the possession. How did this dude get his nickname? He doesn’t even attempt to break down the defense.

I’m encouraged by what I saw tonight out of the 5 guys who are clearly our 5 best players. But after that group, it’s a big drop off, and Zoom ain’t in that group. I hope he shows something soon because we’re paying him too much to be shown up by Mason Williams every game.
Was a Mcd AA - someone could try coaching the kid.

I personally didn't know much about him as watch zero Washington. Watched plenty of Wilkins and knew he'd be a stud.

I mean zoom was the first guy he contacted when portal players could be contacted.

Yea it was all Wilkins fault we were down lol. He made Milan miss assignments. He didn’t get all the rebounds. He made Moreno not hustle up the court and get across half before he was passed to. All Wilkins fault no one else.

Funny thing is he did best when he picked a bunch of under-recruited guys from the portal before his first season. Since then he’s gone after guys who have no interest in what he’s selling.

Who knows? Maybe he is still going after the same type of guys but negative recruitment from other coaches is taking its toll?

As a PG, he needs to look toiwards distributing the ball first and getting the ball to others FIRST, not shoot first. They're not going to respect him shooting from distance. They know he's looking to get into the paint.

He really needs to reset his playstyle for us to be the best we can be as a team. There is no room for egos on this team. Be confident, play confident, play smart, shut up and do your job. Once you have played well, and then followed that up with actually beating someone good in a game that counts, THEN you can make some low-key trash talk. At that point, you'll have earned that, at least.

When a true freshman comes out and outperforms you in the only two (exhibition) games you've played in as a team, you need to reassess your actions and adjust accordingly.

I still truly feel like we need Zoom to lead us. But he has to play and earn his playtime like anyone else. I have to think the coaches will work intently with him and we will see huge improvement immediately.

The preseason thoughts on Zoom-Wilkins was spot on so far.

Wilkins is good, but streaky. He's long, but slow laterally and isn't keeping smaller, quicker guards from getting past him, even allowing straight line drives to the rim. Having multiple 7 footers that can't really jump high won't be very successful against lapses like that.

Zoom is playing like all the critical people have said : He's a MID level SEC guard. Turnovers are a liability with him. And so far, they're right.

Assists and the A:TO ratio have been encouraging so far. Too many TO's to begin with, however. We've only "solved" the Turnover issue with Zoom not being on the floor. That solves NOTHING. It's only working around a HUGE PROBLEM.

We will only go as far as Zoom and Wilkins can take us, with Williams as a great piece coming off the bench. If we have to move Williams to a starting role, then I hope and pray Zoom can cope with it and perform well off the bench.

Well, we shall see how it all goes. I'm here, all in, but concerned. Let's clean things up

Peace !
- runt
