Kane Wommack describes his feelings on working alongside Ryan Grubb

This offseason, Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer brought in Ryan Grubb to be the team’s next offensive coordinator. He’s seemingly hit the ground running and built a strong relationship with defensive coordinator Kane Wommack.
Now, with Fall Camp well underway, Wommack shared that he and Grubb get along well. In fact, the two share plenty of similarities that may not complement each other, but certainly do help them build off one another.
“Well, we’re both really competitive people,” Wommack said. “So, in that way, we don’t complement each other at all. But it’s fun. It’s fun competing against him every day. The experiences that he has had and that I’ve had, and we’ve never got to work together, but it’s really enjoyable talking ball in the offseason.”
Ryan Grubb and Kalen DeBoer have a long history working together. The pair have worked together at Sioux Falls, Eastern Michigan, Fresno State, and Washington before coming together again at Alabama. Clearly, they have a strong connection, which now seems to be growing between Grubb and Wommack, too.
“I think when you see the game from a holistic view,” Wommack said. “Which I think both of us kind of see the game, we have an appreciation for the other side of the ball and what’s good scheme and what are good fundamentals. So, we kind of bounce those ideas off each other, which is really great. I think we are both aggressive in nature. We have kind of an attacking style mentality. We’re gonna be aggressive offensively. We’re going to be aggressive defensively. There’s a variation of scheme things that we do, right? I’d say we both carry probably a decent amount of scheme.”

Alabama is coming off a season where they finished 42nd nationally in total offense, averaging 410.2 yards per game. The Crimson Tide were also 22nd in scoring offense, averaging 33.8 points per game. Ryan Grubb will now join last year’s offensive coordinators Nick Sheridan and JaMarcus Shephard, who are in co-offensive coordinator roles. The hope is that as a group, they can push the Crimson Tide forward to being one of the top offenses in the country.
“But, ultimately, what’s fun about him is that he has a sense of urgency to better his side of the ball. Hopefully, if I can get up in the morning the right way and take the steps right to do the same thing defensively. We are the pushers. The coordinators are the ones holding everybody accountable to the standard,” Wommack said. “From a detail standpoint of accomplishing the vision that we have in our heads. So, he’s fun to work with. I really enjoy it.”
Alabama will open up play this season with an interesting road test against Florida State. After that, SEC play begins on September 27th on the road against Georgia.
