As Billy Napier gets ready for his first season as Florida head coach, he just finalized his 2022 recruiting class. With 2023 recruiting already well underway, he thinks the Gators can stay competitive on the trail.

Florida came in with the No. 19 class from the Class of 2022 and the No. 9 class in the SEC, according to the On3 Consensus Team Rankings. With Napier settling into his role, the Gators have a chance to boost their recruiting profile after the coaching change — and he thinks they have the ability to do so.

“I do think that our administration has given us resources to be very competitive,” Napier said. “We had no complaints in that regard. I’m confident that we’ll be able to be competitive. I think those things are a little bit subjective, too, relative to how you interpret what’s being spent, who owns their planes, who doesn’t.

“There’s lots of things that go into those equations. So far, our administration has been outstanding relative to giving us what we need to be competitive in recruiting.”

Florida’s 2022 class is highlighted by safety Kamari Wilson, the No. 8 prospect in the state of Florida, and linebacker Shemar James, Alabama’s No. 3-ranked prospect, according to the On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Billy Napier explains why the offseason program is his favorite time of year

New Florida head coach Billy Napier is excited to begin his first offseason program with the Gators. Florida has officially set a start date for the beginning of spring practice, which will begin on March 15. Napier has previously said that this is his favorite time of the year.

When asked why this time of the year is his favorite in a press conference on Friday, Napier said that the offseason provides the Florida with an opportunity to truly grow and become tougher as a team.

“Well I think it’s a combination of conditioning, you’re creating a certain toughness,” Napier said. “It’s not just physical toughness, but it’s mental toughness. I think that’s the important part. But really the self-discipline of the player. What he eats, is he hydrated, the sleep component. I think it challenges the attitude of the player, the body language of the player, self talk.

“I think that we have an opportunity to develop some leadership on our team. They get in positions where they got to choose what they’re going to say. And ultimately it gives our staff, the coaches an opportunity to model what we would expect from the players from a leadership standpoint. So it’s really their first opportunity with the core of our team that’s here to work with the staff.”
