Rarely do players with the intention of playing two sports in college follow through with the plan. Trey’Dez Green was different, though, getting time in football and basketball at LSU. Brian Kelly and Matt McMahon both saw value in the 6-6 star at tight end and forward.

Lately, Green has really thrived on the gridiron and might be becoming a full-time football player. Kelly addressed the latest plan on Green potentially playing both sports. Right now, all focus is on football and if he wants to play basketball, the option remains open.

“I don’t know really what the plans are moving forward,” Kelly said Wednesday on the SEC Coaches Teleconference. “I’m so focused on the football, and my job is to develop him as a football player. And he’s been amazing, he’s locked in, focused, taking care of his academics, and coming here everyday with a great attitude about playing the game. We’ll always leave that option open to him, to pursue basketball, but right now his focus is on being the best he can be for LSU football.”

Green played in six basketball games last season, getting on the court with an average of just under seven minutes each time out there. He totaled 11 points, 10 blocks, and a block — an easier way to look at things than his average. Career highs in points came against Texas, going two for two from the field. LSU then appreciated the three rebounds Green was able to secure in the Auburn game.

Numbers are a little better when discussing football. Through seven games, Green has 15 receptions for 210 yards and three touchdowns. Most of his production comes over the past two weeks, finally breaking out in a big way. Against South Carolina and Vanderbilt, Green put up 193 yards and two scores. Maybe something is finally clicking between him and quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

Next up is a rivalry showdown vs. the Texas A&M Aggies. Ranked the No. 3 team in the country, LSU can get its own season back on the right track with a win. Mike Elko likely knows the threat Green now possesses in the passing game. After all, it’s tough to miss him when watching.

As for basketball, McMahon sees his team’s season begin on Nov. 3. If Green is going to rejoin the basketball program at some point, football season likely will be over. Getting back for SEC play could be viewed as a possibility.
