LSU linebacker Whit Weeks kicked off SEC Media Days with a bang. In the early hours of the event, Weeks made a bold prediction about Tigers quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.

“I think he (Garrett Nussmeier) is gonna win the Heisman this year,” Weeks said, per On3’s JD Pickell.

Weeks isn’t alone in his prediction. According to FanDuel, Nussmeier currently has the second-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy this year, only trailing Texas quarterback Arch Manning.

Nussmeier has been near the top of virtually every list of preseason quarterback rankings, and many experts are already penciling him in as the top pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. To say expectations are high would be an understatement.

Nonetheless, Nussmeier has shown he’s capable of meeting lofty expectations. After spending three seasons as a backup, Nussmeier was finally LSU’s full-time starting quarterback last season.

He didn’t allow the opportunity to go to waste, completing 64.2% of his pass attempts for 4,052 yards and 29 touchdowns compared to just 12 interceptions. Of course, if Nussmeier wants to take home the most-coveted individual award in college football, he’ll have to utilize his legs as well.

Last season, Nussmeier rarely scrambled out of the pocket, and ultimately finished the season with a net loss in rushing yards. In contrast, when LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels won the Heisman in 2023, he amassed 1,134 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

Nussmeier must address this discrepancy in the 2025 campaign to permanently etch his name in LSU history. The 23-year-old quarterback believes he’s ready for the challenge.

“Being able to watch an entire season, correct mistakes and to go back and see my weaknesses and see things that I need to improve on, find the tells that I may have been giving to defenses and things like that. It’s a totally different ballgame, to have a full season to be able to watch and correct,” Nussmeier said. “Also, just from my personal growth as a player and having those experiences under my belt, I’ve seen a lot.

“We saw a lot of different defenses last year, a lot of different things. People had to try a lot of different things to stop us. Being able to see all those things – all those different pressures, all the different coverages – is something that’s going to help me a lot.”

LSU will kick off its season in a massive showdown against Clemson at 7:30 p.m. ET on Aug. 30. The game will air live on ABC.
