David Pollack breaks down why Miami should be No. 1 over Ohio State in rankings

Through five games this season, No. 1 Ohio State and No. 2 Miami sit atop the college football world with 5-0 records. The Buckeyes have enjoyed wins over No. 1 Texas, Grambling, Ohio, Washington and Minnesota, while the Hurricanes have stacked their SOS with wins over No. 8 Notre Dame, Bethune, No. 18 USF, Florida and No. 18 Florida State.

Although both teams have been dominant to this point in the season, many have debated that Miami should actually be ranked ahead of Ohio State due to its stronger wins. David Pollack debated between the two teams on the latest edition of ‘See Ball Get Ball with David Pollack‘ and strongly sided with the Hurricanes.

“Is it Miami or is it Ohio State?” Pollack asked. “Like, who is number one? Who should be number one? And again, that’s the question now. We’ve heard all weekend about who is the best team and we can debate who the best team is. It’s not about that. Who SHOULD be the number one team in the country? And who should be the number one team in the country is Miami. It’s not close.

“The number one team in the country is Miami and their schedule has been way harder. The top-four teams Miami has played is Notre Dame, South Florida, Florida, FSU. Ohio State has played Texas, Washington, Minnesota and Ohio. That’s their four best teams. That’s the fourth best team they’ve had.”

Comparing Ohio State and Miami

Ohio State has won its first five games by an average of 32.4 points. Miami wasn’t quite as dominant, as it won its first five games by an average of 21.4 points. None of the Buckeyes’ wins however were against teams ranked in the latest AP Top 25 Rankings. Miami currently holds wins over No. 16 Notre Dame, No. 24 USF and No. 25 Florida State.

Ryan Day‘s defense has been one of the best in the country. It is allowing just 5.0 points per game (first in NCAA) and 215.8 yards per game (third in NCAA). The ‘Canes are a bit farther down the list, allowing 276.4 yards per game (16th in NCAA) and 13.6 points per game (15th in NCAA). However, they’re both more than getting the job done.

“You have to say that (Miami should be No. 1 in the country) right now because they have been tested,” ESPN‘s Paul Finebaum said on The Matt Barrie Show Sunday. “Going to Florida State speaks for itself. And I know Florida State lost to Virginia, but that’s understandable. But, Miami really looked good, and they’ve been tested enough times that I think it’s fair to say they’re the best team in the country.”

Miami now gets a well deserved bye-week, while the Buckeyes travel to No. 17 Illinois this weekend.
