Miami sophomore linebacker Adarius Hayes has been indefinitely suspended from all athletic-related activities per program policy, the team announced Friday afternoon, according to Miami Herald’s Jordan McPherson. This comes after Hayes was charged with three counts of vehicular homicide following a fatal crash in May, per the Associated Press.

Hayes has already surrendered himself to police in his hometown of Largo, Fla., and he’s been booked into Pinellas County Jail, according to the AP. Hayes was also charged with one count of reckless driving stemming from the May incident that took the lives of a 78-year-old woman and two young children, ages 10 and 4, who were in a Kia Soul that collided with Hayes’ Dodge Durango.

Miami’s statement on Hayes’ indefinite suspension read, per McPherson: “Following the charges issued today by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, student-athlete Adarius Hayes has been indefinitely suspended from all athletic-related activities per athletic department police. We will have no further comment.”

The Largo police investigation into the incident found the two young children were ejected from the vehicle following the collision. That was attributed to Hayes “maneuvering aggressively through traffic,” reportedly driving 78.9 mph in a 40 mph zone at the time of the crash.

“The investigation concluded that Adarius Hayes’ egregious speed, aggressive and reckless lane changes, and complete disregard for surrounding traffic conditions demonstrated a willful and deliberate disregard for the safety of others, constituting reckless driving. These actions directly led to the tragic deaths of the three victims,” Largo police said in a statement Friday, per the AP.

Largo police reported the Kia carrying the woman and the two children was “lawfully executing a left-hand turn” when Hayes’ vehicle “made a rapid and dangerous maneuver” that led to the collision.

Hayes was also hospitalized after the crash, but was released two days later, according to a May 12 update from the school. Hayes played in 12 games last season as a true freshman on the Miami football team, mostly coming on special teams. He was expected to play a more significant role on the Hurricanes’ defense this upcoming season.

Hayes played high school football at Largo (FL), where he was a four-star prospect. He was the No. 175 overall recruit in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.
