According to On3’s Pete Nakos, Miami defensive lineman Daylen Russell plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Russell just completed his second season with the program after signing with Miami out of high school. Now, he intends to continue his career elsewhere.

Russell played high school football at Miami (FL) Columbus, where he was a three-star prospect. He was the No. 1,158 overall recruit in the 2024 cycle, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

Four other schools were involved with Russell before he ultimately decided to play for the hometown team. In-state, Florida State and UCF were after the defensive lineman. But Louisville and Nebraska were a part of his top five as well.

Once on campus, Russell took some time getting accustomed to the college game. He did not see action during the 2024 season, as his official Miami profile states that most reps came on the practice squad. A redshirt did take place, though, meaning there are still three years of eligibility remaining for Russell.

The 2025 season saw an increased role, getting on the field in five different games. Russell recorded six tackles and one tackle for a loss. His TFL came in the season opener against Bethune-Cookman.

Russell now holds an opportunity to find a place with more playing time available to him. Teams are never going to shy away from defensive linemen listed at 6-3, 298 pounds.

Miami set to play in College Football Playoff

If nothing else, the timing of this decision from Russell is an interesting one. Miami is set to play in the College Football Playoff, getting a welcome surprise on Selection Sunday. Originally on the outside looking in, the CFP committee put Miami in the 12-team field over Notre Dame.

A great offensive line is waiting on the other end as well. Texas A&M knows how critical protecting quarterback Marcel Reed is. Getting the run game going is quite important for the Aggies too, even with some injuries at the running back position.

There is no indication of Russell’s plans through the College Football Playoff. If he steps away from the team, Miami will, at the very least, be down some depth in College Station at Kyle Field. Waiting on the other side are the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Cotton Bowl. It’s all part of the modern college football world.
