Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola will miss the rest of the season with a broken fibula, On3’s Pete Nakos confirms. The sophomore signal caller suffered the injury against USC on Saturday.

Before the news dropped, Raiola took to social media to thank his fans for the well wishes he’s received since the injury. He plans to return better than ever upon his recovery.

“Thank y’all for your thoughts and prayers! God’s vision and plan is so much greater than I can imagine!!” he said in a post on Instagram. “Just a small bump in the road to a beautiful journey back to playing the game I love!!”

The Nebraska QB suffered the injury late in the third quarter. TJ Lateef stepped in to replace him. USC would defeat the Huskers 21-17 as Raiola would not return to the game. Raiola finished the game completing 10-15 passing for 91 yards and a touchdown during the matchup.

Cornhuskers head coach Matt Rhule gave additional insight into the conversations Raiola had with medical staff on the sideline. In the end, it was decided that he should be held out and evaluated further. In hindsight, that was the right call.

“From a medical perspective, they were like, ‘He can’t run,’” Rhule said. “I just didn’t see the respectable thing to do to put a guy out there who can’t run. …Really at the end of the day, I just don’t think you can put a guy out there who can’t defend himself or protect himself.

“The trainers didn’t want him to go out there, but they didn’t say, ‘No, he can’t.’ They just said he shouldn’t be out there. I told Dylan, ‘I love you too much to ask you to play when you’re hurt like this.’”

Raiola finished his sophomore season completing 72.4% (181-250) for 2,000 yards and 18 touchdowns compared to six interceptions this season. He led the Cornhuskers to a 6-2 record in games he started and was able to finish.

Nebraska will be forced to move forward without its starting quarterback for the final three games of the regular season. With six wins, the Huskers have already qualified for bowl eligibility this season.

Next up for the Huskers is a road trip to Pasadena to take on UCLA. They’ll round out the regular season with matchups at Penn State and at home against Iowa.
