Ryan Day on potential for one transfer portal window: ‘It doesn’t make any sense to me’

Last week, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee voted to support a single transfer portal window, a move that would once again reshape how rosters are built. Not everyone is fan of the proposal, which hasn’t been formally adopted just yet.
Ohio State coach Ryan Day was blunt when asked about it by reporters. Does he support it?
“No. I don’t think it’s a good idea at all,” Day said. “And the conversations that we had with the Big Ten coaches, the majority of them agree.”
Opinions on the transfer portal windows have run the gamut, with some saying the recent moves to shrink them down actually do a disservice to players. Others think having two windows open per year puts programs at a disadvantage.
Wherever you stand, the fact that the NCAA has already tweaked the transfer portal windows as many times as it has is indicative of the issue. It’s hard to nail a time that works best for everyone.

“I just don’t quite understand how for teams that are playing in the playoffs are expected to make the decisions and sign their upcoming players while they’re still getting ready to play for games,” Day said. “It doesn’t make any sense to me.”
In other words, someone is likely to be unhappy. Day’s argument is valid; playoff teams will be asked to juggle a whole lot if the transfer portal window opens on Jan. 2, as reportedly expected.
Still, that’s the direction college football appears to be moving. Day, though, was going to say his piece first, lobbying for the change to be reconsidered.
“I know the calendar is funky but I know that the Big Ten and Tony Petitti has been working hard because he doesn’t believe it either, and neither do the coaches in the Big Ten who have had a lot of long discussions about that to try to work through the different windows,” Day said. “But I don’t agree with it being in January.”
