Get ready for seven hours of commercial free, er, National Signing Day? That’s what Rutgers football is going for on early signing day for the Class of 2023, cutting a promo with NFL RedZone host Scott Hanson — an alumni of former Big East rival Syracuse — to introduce “ScarletZone” as the theme for the day.

While it’s not fully clear how Hanson will be involved, if at all, on signing day, the homage to the very popular NFL RedZone jump-around coverage — which Hanson masterfully hosts — is sure to play well. Familiar, certainly, and Hanson is a heck of a pitchman.

“Hi everyone, Scott Hanson here from NFL RedZone. And welcome to National Signing Day eve. It’s a day thousands of young men have been waiting for ever since they first picked up a football. Your academic and athletic achievements in high school will be rewarded tomorrow, as you and your families take on the next chapter in life. The Rutgers football family is growing. So, who will be the first Scarlet Knight to join the CHOP23 Class? Tune in tomorrow for ScarletZone National Signing Day Coverage,” Hanson said.

The video then cuts away to a RedZone-esque waiting screen with a countdown clock ticking down from 12 hours. The video was posted to the Rutgers football Twitter page at precisely 7 p.m. on the eve of National Signing Day, just 12 hours before letters of intent will start flowing in.

The jump-around coverage concept that RedZone brings to an NFL Sunday does seem applicable for signing day programming. It’s not hard to imagine Hanson setting up a jump out to a high schooler at a table in a gym, hats in front of them. Or, taking a few minutes in studio to break down what viewers just saw in the last bit of action. All before going back live to the next letter of intent coming in to the Rutgers football facility.

Whether or not Rutgers really has Hanson on hand for such coverage remains to be seen, but it’s sure to draw a bit of attention to Piscataway, surely as designed.
