Dont'e Thornton injury update: ESPN broadcast reveals unfortunate news on Tennessee WR

The injuries continue to pile up for Tennessee on Saturday against Mississippi State as receiver Dont’e Thornton is the latest player to go down. The ESPN broadcast revealed before the fourth quarter that he is out the remainder of the game with an upper body injury.
The news comes after quarterback Nico Iamaleava was already ruled out for the rest of the game before the start of the second half. Thornton led Tennessee with three catches for 104 yards and a touchdown prior to his exit.
Dont’e Thornton has been the top pass catcher for Tennessee this season as he had 17 catches for 401 yards and three touchdowns entering Saturday. The Vols would hang on to win the game 33-14 following his exit.
Hopefully the receiver sitting out the remainder of the second half was simply precautionary with the game already in hand. Tennessee improved to 801 (5-1 SEC) on the season and has another big matchup against Georgia next week.

“We anticipate having him next week,” Heupel said.
The coach added that keeping Iamaleava out of the second half was simply a precautionary measure. The team was still able to get the job done without him and will hope he rests up and gets as healthy as possible before the matchup with Georgia.
Iamaleava, a former five-star recruit in the 2023 cycle, is in his first season as the Tennessee starting quarterback. He has so far thrown for 1,705 yards and nine touchdowns with four interceptions on the season.
Tennessee is one of three one-loss teams remaining in the SEC along with Texas and Texas A&M. If Iamaleava stays healthy, the Vols should have every opportunity to compete for a conference title.
