Now back in College Station for his second season at Texas A&M after transferring from Fresno State, Jaylen Henderson now has to learn a new system. Collin Klein is now in as offensive coordinator under new head coach Mike Elko, and the learning process has begun now that classes are underway.

So far, Henderson said Elko and Klein have made strong first impressions after taking over the program. Henderson made five appearances last year under Fisher and former offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino, but suffered a fractured humerus in the bowl game and underwent surgery after the season.

With spring practice looming, the new staff is off to a good start.

“It’s been a great transition with the coaching staff,” Henderson said on TexAgs Radio. “It’s exactly what we needed in the program. The first week of training right now, you can tell this is what a championship program’s supposed to look like. So we’re all excited with the training and everything. On offense, the stuff that I looked at, it looks pretty impressive. We’re just all excited to get ready to go in the spring.”

Jaylen Henderson on recovery from injury: ‘I can throw right now’

Henderson had a solid first year at Texas A&M in a reserve role, throwing for 715 yards and six touchdowns across five games. His best game came against Mississippi State when he completed 11 of 16 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns in the air while adding 60 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

He could’ve put up even bigger numbers, although he got hurt on the very first play of the Texas Bowl against Oklahoma State, requiring surgery.

Looking back on the injury, Henderson said it wasn’t easy to deal with at first. His recovery is going well, though, and he’s in a good place as he gets ready for his senior campaign.

“I’ve never broken or got hurt like that,” Henderson said. “I didn’t know if it was dislocated or broken. I was like, ‘Is it out?’ And he was like, ‘Yeah, something is dislocated.’ But, it was my bone that was out, so he had to pop it back in to stabilize it.

“It was very uncomfortable. I couldn’t sleep like the first three or four days. But then, after that, everything has like gotten better every day. My range of motion is coming back. I can bend it. I can throw right now.”
