Jimbo Fisher evaluates how new coaches are performing at Texas A&M

The Texas A&M Aggies are off to a much better start offensively in 2023 compared to last year. The Aggies are 2-1 start to the season, with their offense firing on all cylinders. This past offseason, Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher made some changes to the offense, including adding former Arkansas and Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino as his new offensive coordinator.
So far, through the first three weeks, the Aggies offense has been explosive, averaging 44 points per game. As Texas A&M prepares to start SEC play this Saturday against Auburn, Fisher took time to evaluate his new coaches’ performance.
“Well, I think you go back to their history, their past history,” said Fisher. “I mean, guys don’t ever deviate very far; I mean, guys don’t go from running the wishbone to the run and shoot. Now, how they use their players, who their featured guy is, (and) what are they trying to do different. They’re probably still learning their guys a little bit, too, and certain talents and how to feature guys and get them the ball.
“This day is relatively similar. But then again, that’s why you gotta teach. When you teach offense and defense, you’re teaching concepts. Everything you do has a rule based off: is it a three-man group … (or) a two-man side. So if there’s different things that happen, which always are in a game, you have rules that apply to it. That’s the part of the early season things in which you go. And that’s why you got to teach conceptually, and you’re not memorizing what they do all the time.”

Fisher says he would like to see continued improvement in trenches for Texas A&M
Above all else, Jimbo Fisher would like to see the play from his offensive and defensive lines continue to trend up as the season goes on. Outside of the quarterback, he explained how the trenches are where success starts and stops.
With Texas A&M sitting at 2-1 and entering the SEC slate, solid play up front will be even more valuable. And Fisher wishes more people could appreciate how valuable strong line play is to a winning outfit.
“I always think — because the intricacies of the O line, D line, I don’t think people give the true credit for how complicated and tough it truly is and understand how the game is truly won and lost there. And we get so enamored by the skill guys in space, but the true — the greatness is really measured by guys [in the trenches],” Fisher said. “So I always think, in the lines of scrimmage, I think you’re always trying to improve in every way, shape or form.”
