After Marcel Reed left Saturday’s game against Utah State with an injury, Texas A&M coach Mike Elko shared an update postgame. Reed initially went to the tent before going back to the locker room for further evaluation.

In the third quarter of the matchup, Reed scrambled and took a big hit from a Utah State defender. He stayed on the field while the training staff attended to him, and he later walked to the sidelines under his own power.

Following a stint in the injury tent, Reed went back to the locker room, though he was “available” but “unlikely” to return, SEC Network’s Alyssa Lang said. Postgame, Elko told Lang he expected Reed to be okay after the injury.

“He’ll be alright,” Elko said after the game ended.

As he began his postgame press conference, Elko expressed a similar sentiment. While he declined to say what the specific injury was, Elko said he expects Reed to be available for next week when Texas A&M heads to South Bend for a marquee matchup against Notre Dame.

“We fully anticipate Marcel will be fine for next week,” Elko told reporters in his opening statement. “That’s kind of where we’re at.”

Reed had a big year at Texas A&M in 2024 after taking over for Conner Weigman at quarterback. He showcased his dual-threat ability, throwing for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns while adding 543 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. The 2025 season marks Reed’s first as Texas A&M’s full-time starting quarterback.

In Texas A&M’s first game of the year last week, Reed put together a strong performance. He threw for 289 yards and four touchdowns, along with 39 rushing yards, as the Aggies took down UTSA in the season opener.

Texas A&M backup quarterback Miles O’Neill came in to replace Reed, though Lang noted earlier in the broadcast that may have been the case anyway. O’Neill appeared to be warming up on the sidelines prior to Reed’s injury, considering Texas A&M had a sizable 35-14 lead at the time.

“Something I was noticing before Marcel Reed went down … O’Neill was actually already, what appeared to be warming up on the sidelines so he was ready to come in,” Lang said while Reed was in the tent. “It makes me wonder if Marcel was maybe a series away from being done for the day, anyway.”
