Marcel Reed left Texas A&M‘s 44-22 win over Utah State in the third quarter, leading to some concern in his status for Week 3’s ranked matchup against Notre Dame. On Monday, Aggies head coach Mike Elko revealed a positive update on his QB1.

“We’ll be fine injury-wise,” Elko said. “Marcel will be fine. That’s where we’re at.”

His injury occurred during the third quarter of the matchup, Reed scrambled and took a big hit from a Utah State defender. He stayed on the field while the training staff attended to him, and he later walked to the sidelines under his own power.

After the game, Elko said simply, “he’ll be alright.” That sentiment was echoed to begin Notre Dame week.

Before exiting the game on Saturday, Reed was the catalyst for over half of Texas A&M’s scoring production. He threw for 220 yards and three touchdowns while running for 66 yards and another score.

“Another day where he had (nearly) 300 yards combined total offense, accounted for another four touchdowns,” Elko said. “(He) didn’t turn the football over, so we were really happy with the way he played.”

Texas A&M backup quarterback Miles O’Neill came in to replace Reed, though Lang noted earlier in the broadcast that may have been the case anyway. O’Neill appeared to be warming up on the sidelines prior to Reed’s injury, considering Texas A&M had a sizable 35-14 lead at the time.

However, it appears that Reed may be back on the field sooner rather than later. Although, Elko was vague with his update.

In Texas A&M’s Week 1 matchup, Reed put together a strong performance. He threw for 289 yards and four touchdowns, along with 39 rushing yards, as the Aggies took down UTSA in the season opener.

Reed had a big year at Texas A&M in 2024 after taking over for Conner Weigman at quarterback. He showcased his dual-threat ability, throwing for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns while adding 543 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on the ground. The 2025 season marks Reed’s first as Texas A&M’s full-time starting quarterback.

He’ll hope to be back on the field in time for Saturday’s showdown against the Fighting Irish. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET and will air live on NBC and Peacock. The Aggies are seven-point underdogs to Notre Dame heading into the matchup on the road, according to BetMGM.
